BERTRAND..BARTON..BATRAW..

I was looking at the 1860 Franklin Co. census and as I was going thru the B’s I noticed some names under Batraw that looked familiar...I checked my files and there they were..

The surname Batraw or Barton was really Bertrand when the family moved from Quebec..I guess if a Bertrand was to say his or her name in French it would sound like Batraw..or Bertraw..and don’t forget that many of these families could not read or write. I do have corrections on the husbands first names in two towns...Fort Covington..and Westville..they were brothers,

DAVID AND DESIRE BERTRAND
and they married sisters..

JULIE AND SOPHIE CHALOUP..
and one was my ggggrandfather (DESIRE)..who’s name was changed to John Batraw

FORT COVINGTON

In house #490 The husbands name was Desire Bertrand when the family moved from Quebec..not John Batraw..and the child named Phelps would later to be changed to Freeman Barton.

WESTVILLE

In house #781 The husbands name was David Bertrand when he moved from Quebec not Danial Batraw..

CENSUS 1860 WESTVILLE

House 781

Batraw

David 12 Canada
Louis 10 Canada

Florence 1 N.Y.
Sophia 15m N.Y.

The Bertrand family name was changed to Batraw, in some cases to Barton..but they were all the same family.. I am not sure when, it could be when they applied for citizenship or by the census taker who did not speak French and the name got anglicized to Batraw or Barton..

I hope this will help anyone researching the Bertrands or Batraws or Bartons that you believe came from Quebec...
