Houseplants-Growing Requirements, Shade Tolerant, Plants Poisonous to Pets

The most dependably attractive feature of houseplants is their leaves. These plants have a variety of textures, leaf forms, and variegated patterns of green, white, silver, cream, and yellow.
Although most houseplants are grown primarily for their foliage, many have attractive flowers as well. Some have flowers almost continuously or for a month at a time, with a variety of colors and forms.

The Legend of the Poinsettia

The poinsettia is also known as "The Flower of Christmas Eve". It is native to Mexico and Central America. The story surrounding the poinsettia goes like this--Once, a poor child in Mexico was on her way to church on Christmas Eve.She began to weep because she had no gift to take with her to place on the altar of the Virgin and Child. Through her tears, she saw a beautiful angel suddenly appear before her. The angel told the child to gather the weeds from the side of the road where she stood. The child did as she was told. When she came to the altar with her bouquet of wilted weeds, stars of red blossoms burst forth at every stem...

Caring for Poinsettias:

  • Poinsettias require bright, indirect light, and cool temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees.
  • The plants must be kept away from cold drafts and direct heat.
  • Soil should be kept moderately moist and well drained.
  • During periods of active growth, fertilize every two weeks.
  • For bloom in December, poinsettias must be kept at around 50 degrees, in total darkness 14 hours a day, beginning in mid September.

Avocado  Insert toothpicks into an avocado pit and suspend a quarter inch deep in a glass of water, pointed end up. Maintain water level. In a few weeks, when roots are two inches long, remove toothpicks and plant in an 8" pot, water regularly.

Pineapple  Cut off the top of a pineapple, about an inch below the leaves. Trim away the top, leaving the core attached to the leaves. Dry for several days. Insert in sand. Rooting takes 6-8 weeks. When rooted, remove from sand and plant in a container of well drained soil.

Sweet Potato  To sprout, place in a glass of water, with the end where the potato was attached to the vine pointing up. Shoots will develop in a few days. Train to grow on a trellis or around a window.

Citrus Trees  For grapefruits, oranges, lemons, and limes; place seeds in small containers of potting soil with good drainage. Most will sprout in about two weeks. Keep well watered, in a warm location.

Beans  Soak dried beans in water for 24 hours. Plant in a container of well drained potting soil in a sunny location, water often.

Potatoes  Place a small potato with eyes in a deep container of potting soil. Place container in a bright, sunny window.
