RAILROAD SPIKE KNIFE - LETTER OPENER

This item was hand forged from a railroad spike. The handle was made first by twisting the spike while it was red hot and then the blade was hammered to shape from the rest of the spike, below the twist. After it cools the blade is then ground to it's final finished shape and then it is polished to a nice shine.
Next the pattern is created by carving away the background to create the scroll design in raised relief, then the background is darkened with a gun "cold blue" compound.

The dark spot seen here ,on the blade, is a dent from the forging process and since it is at a lower level then the rest of the face it isn't polished. It is shallow.

It is 9" long and the blade is 1 1/4" wide.
