The Winter Solstice
In the Northern Hemisphere, the first point of Capricorn is the Winter Solstice-the shortest day/longest night of the year. In Alaska, which is where this picture comes from, the Sun rises at 10 and sets at 2, and even when it is sunny, there is an eerie half-finished light inbetween, like a dawn that never really arrives. Nature (and humans) are at their sleepiness right now, and in the old (auld) days we would take the time off and do just that. We would eat and sleep and tell stories around the fire until the Feast of the Three Kings (January 6th), when the light came back. Nowadays it's Christmas three days away, and we eat and sleep at our desks while waiting until 12/24 to arrive, then scurry about.

At least the old pagans who celebrated Saturnalia had the whole week off. We still take the week off, but instead of everybody, only those with vacation time do now.

We begin to feel and see hierarchy now. We see one person snuggle more deeply in her fur coat as she awaits her chauffeur take her to a place next to a roaring fireplace. We see the other huddle inside a doorway next to the mailboxes with a blanket wrapped around her, vainly fighting off all of the cold. Ideally this should stir our generosity to an offer to sit by the fire and pass an extra bowl of soup-and maybe it did once.

Nowadays it seems to stir a bit of smugness from some.

The three signs that are covered by Winter (Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces) are concerned with our place in the wider world and our obligations to it. Capricorn starts off with the issue of our greater social connections. It's rule or ruled, the scope of our ambitions, boss and bossed. Aquarius starts at the mountaintop-the connection between all humanity past social status. Pisces is the relationship between us and God-the cosmic link between spirits that transcends all consideration of temporal matters. In short, Capricorn climbs the mountain and attains the greatest success, Aquarius asks about the meaning of that success, and Pisces lets that go and submits to the higher sense of service to a good that goes beyond success.
