CUBIC HOUSES

ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

The original idea of these cubic houses came about in the 1970s. The concept behind these houses is that Piet Blom tries to create a forest by each cube representing an abstract tree; therefore the whole village becomes a forest. The cubes contain the living areas, which are split into three levels. The triangle-shaped lower level contains the living area. The middle level contains the sleeping area and a bathroom, while the top level, also in a triangular shape, is used as either an extra bedroom or a living space.

THE STONE HOUSE

GUIMARAES, PORTUGAL

A little stone house in Portugal is making a lot of waves.  It's not that it's a house made out of stone; there are a lot of stone houses throughout Europe.  It's that this home in the mountainous Fafe area isn't just little stones cobbled together; it's more like a single solid stone. A Casa do Penedo, or The House of Stone, is carved from and built between four gigantic boulders. Originally a family retreat built in 1974, it's now such a popular tourist destination that owner Vitor Rodrigues has had to reinforce the windows, put in a steel door, and eventually had to move out to find respite from the tourists! Despite looking fearsome from the outside, inside the home is actually quite pleasant in a rustic way. It also has a lot of amenities, including a swimming pool, fireplace, and power-generating wind turbines. It's definitely designed to go back to the future, Flintstones style!

HANG GNA GUESTHOUSE (THE CRAZY HOUSE)

DALAT, VIETNAM

There is a reason why the Hang Nga Guesthouse is better known as Vietnam's Crazy House. Can you guess what it is?

This extraordinary building resembles a large, spooky tree, its rooms and corridors take unexpected twists and turns and it's not unusual to come across a giant spider web hanging from the ceiling.

The on-site art gallery lets you know what the designer, Hang Ngaâ's, intentions were. And the constant flow of tourists shows that this guesthouse isn't just somewhere to stay, but somewhere to experience.

After all, where else can you drink a cup of tea inside a giant giraffe?
