Singapore, yes, Singapore! This city took me by surprise. When I am writing this, several months after my vacation, I am still in awe of that place. Wall to wall, floor to ceiling people, incredible architecture, shopping mall after shopping mall. As it was, I happened to arrive at the beginning of the "Great Singapore Sale", which meant shoppers everywhere!!! It seemed to me, that most Singaporians spend their free time in town, shopping and eating out . Considering how a lot of them live, stacked 20 or more stories high, in towering apartment buildings, that comes as no surprise. That is just my humble opinion, of course.
Helping them get around is a very efficient and affordable public transportation system. Needless to say I, too, took advantage of that.
Oh, and before I forget, some things that may be worth mentioning:
- Traffic is on the left, no surprise, it was once under British rule, but also, because of that, the hot water faucet is on the right.
-
Just about all Malls have Money Exchanges and I found one that did not charge commission. Maybe that was why it gave a better rate for cash than travelers' checks.

Tipping is discouraged. Restaurant bills carry a 10% service charge. And the little extra items that are put on the table while you peruse the menu, like e.g. a hot towel or a small plate of peanuts are included in the bill.

When showing my Singapore Airlines boarding pass at participating stores, restaurants and attractions, I got nice discounts. There was one catch, though. The pass is valid for 7 days after the date of one's flight. For me that was May 20 and since I arrived on the 22nd. I had already lost two days!

And last, but not least, in my hotel room I made my acquaintance with a "flush on demand" toilet. No watertank on top of the seat. Just a pushbutton on the wall above it. Short push....short flush. Long push....long flush. Great way to conserve water.
But, what am I rambling about? Go see for yourself on the following pages, what Singapore had to offer me and how I enjoyed it, the often unbearable heat and humidity notwithstanding........
