And then, in the Altstadt, walking down Bolkerstraße, which is lined on both sides with restaurants, I discovered "Mittag", a relatively cheap, hearty lunch served between noon and 5:30 pm or 6 pm. After that the prices for the same entrees would almost double. The terraces were packed with folks eating their Mittag and I was more than happy to join them. Why pay 17 Euro for a steak after 6 pm while you can have it for half the price at 5:30 pm? The weather was great and dining al fresco was a joy. So, in order to stay within the budget and not starve, I adopted the following strategy: Stock up on breakfast in the hotel, forego lunch and eat a late afternoon Mittag. It worked! |
