Summer is almost over and it is holiday time again. On September 1st, 2003 (the 1st Monday in September), we celebrate Labor Day. It is a holiday in which we pay tribute to the great labor movement. Labor Day commemorates the huge contributions the workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our nation.

Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor, said - "Labor Day differs in every essential from the other holidays of the year in any country. All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."

The pattern for the celebration of Labor Day originated by having a street parade to exhibit to the public the spirit and strength of the trade and labor organizations of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. Later on emphasis was placed on the economic and civic significance, with speeches given by prominent men and women.

Poem for Labor Day

I Hear America Singing

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear;

Those of the mechanics-each one singing his,
as it should be, blithe and strong;

The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam,

The mason singing his, as he makes ready for work,
or leaves off work;

The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat-

the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck;

The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench-

the hatter singing as he stands;

The wood-cutter's song-the ploughboy's, on his way in
the morning, or at the noon intermission, or at sundown;

The delicious singing of the mother-or of the young
wife at work-or of the girl sewing or washing-
Each singing what belongs to her, and to none else;

The day what belongs to the day-At night, the party of
young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing, with open mouths, their strong melodious songs.

-Walt Whitman
