Sgt.1st Class William J. Pence addresses the media at a news conference at Fort Lewis, Wash. Saturday Jan. 5, 2002 about his friend of nearly 13 years, Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman, 31, of San Antonio, who was killed Friday by small-arms fire during an ambush in Afghanistan.
Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman (31) was married to Renae with two children - a daughter Amanda 2 and a son Brandon-age 1. Born April 23, 1970 at Andrews Air Force Base, MD. His father was retired from the Air Force. He wrestled at Centerville High School in Ohio before graduating in 1988 and joining the Army.
His father said "He was a devoted father and husband. He loved parenting his children and cherished the time he had with them and his wife". He had served in Panama, Haiti and Operation Desert Storm for more than a decade.
