The Beginning of Baby Tommy

By Sean Howlett - Sept. 27, 2002

It's a boy!!!! Our wonderful baby has been born. We are now home from the hospital and thank the family members that came or called to help us through this wonderful part of our lives. Our wonderful baby boy is very healthy and both mom and baby are catching up on much needed rest. A brief line by line breakdown of our babies birth is such:

230 PM Tuesday - - - Kris is starting to feel contractions and is not sure if she wants to tell Sean when he gets home as it is probably "Nothing" and everything will be fine.

315 PM Tuesday - - - Sean gets home from work. Kris asks if they were going to go for a walk (hint hint hint) or the gym. Sean says gym and we go to the gym to do a workout.

430 PM Tuesday - - - Good workout. We go to the grocery store for some basic goods and a couple of DVD's to watch. We get an oven pizza for dinner. Kris looks tired, I tell her and she says, "Yeah I'm tired, I'm 40 wks 5 days pregnant I guess I can be tired." I agree and we get going home.

545 PM Tuesday - - - We make the pizza and get settled down for some TV.

830 PM Tuesday - - - When the shows are lame (IE after That seventies show) we begin to watch "Not another Teen movie" and Kris starts to use her Balance Ball. The contractions are about 7 minutes apart but she doesn't want to get Sean all freaked out and decides to wait and see if they begin to get faster.

915 PM Tuesday - - - All right the first movie is over and Kris can't hide it any more. She tells Sean that she has been having contractions for a couple of hours and that they are 6-7 minutes apart, regular and noticeable. Sean jumps up and grabs the phone calls and lets the Doc know what is going on. The doctor says we can go up or just wait and see. Kris asks Sean to wait a little bit and see if the contractions increase. Sean relents and puts down the phone and slaps in "Changing Lanes" into the DVD player.

1045 PM Tuesday - - - Ok after the movie and some more posturing Kris decides to let Sean bring her to the hospital. Sean calls the doc back and starts to whirl around grabbing all the gear for the trip to the Hospital. Kris asks Sean to leave the bags behind as she thinks it is most likely a false alarm. Sean agrees to leave the bags but also say's a "told you so" may be in the works.

1115 PM Tuesday - - - After getting to the Hospital and getting checked out the Doc has news. Kris is between 1-2 cm's dilated and can either wait an hour to be admitted or just admitted. "I told you we should have remembered the bag." Sean says and all laugh. The contractions are getting stronger.

1245 AM Wednesday - - - The Jacuzzi is doing ok but those darn contractions are getting strong. Kris is beginning to feel the pain of childbirth. Seeing how strong the pain is we decide to have a shot of Nuvane (sp?) to take the edge off.

130 AM Wednesday - - - The shot is working. Even though the world spins for Kris it is enough for Sean to go get the gear from home. Leaving Kris with the nurse Sean run's off to gather the necessary goods.

215 AM Wednesday - - - The shot is still working and we settle down for some rest. Kris is 3-4 cm's dilated. Not bad for a couple of hours.

500 AM Wednesday - - - The shot is wearing off. Kris is in great pain. We talk about the possible need for an epidural. With Kris in such pain as she is ready to collapse, we decide it is time for the epi. Sean tells the nurses and the steps are begun for the epi.

700 AM Wednesday - - - Here comes Dr Bob. Dr Bob is an anesthesiologist. He makes the pain go away. Kris is a good 4+ cm's dilated and the epi won't slow the labor much.

8AM to 4Pm Wednesday - - - Up and down the pain comes. Kris is dilating steadily. The water has not broken yet and Kris is nearly 10 cm's. Dr Kegal, the doc on duty for OB examines Kris at 4pm and see's it is time for the water to be broken and the pushing begun. Kris is tired but ready to go.

4pm to 7PM Wednesday - - - Kris pushes for three straight hours. She is exhausted and in pain again. Dr PM has anesthesia give her a booster to take the edge off and give her some rest time and also has her get a bag of glucose to give her some good energy for the final stretch.

7PM to 8 Pm Wednesday - - -The baby is so close. We can see the head between contractions and the Doc says he is only willing to put Kris through three more contractions before trying something else (last try c sec.) Kris tries on her own and almost does it. Doc tries a vacuum assist and it almost does it, almost does it….

8:19 PM Wednesday September 25th 2002

At this time and date Kris and Sean Howlett welcomed their first child into the world. The baby was a boy, 9 lbs 7 ounces 21 inches long. The baby is born natural (with some pain medication) and begins to cry right a way. Except for a slight bruise on the head from the vacuum assist he is born flawless. Blue eyes and strawberry blond hair the baby is very active. The baby is named Thomas Lawton Howlett using names from both the mother and father. Momma and Dada are tired, exhausted, and yet happy that the hard part is over and that the long part is just beginning in the future of their family. They will all go home Friday September 27, 2002 in good health and spirit. In fact baby Tommy helped daddy type this letter while mommy rested. You can't get kids started too early when it comes to computers.

Well, I need to go and help out as much as I can. I am a daddy now and can't expect Momma to do it all. We are so happy that we could share this with the rest of our family.
