Lorenza Soto: Remembrances

Lorenza Soto, Sean Murdock's maternal grandmother, died on April 5, 2005. Here are remembrances by people who knew her.

REMEMBERING LORENZA
Nancy Murdock

Lorenza was an easy woman to like. When we met, she was an experienced business woman who made more than twice what I did, but she never acted as if we were not equals. She had a wicked sense of humor. When I saw that sparkle in her eyes, I knew I’d better be alert not to miss the punch line.

Lorenza accepted Ian’s family as part of her extended family. When it came time for Meri to get a job, it was Lorenza who extended an offer to work in her office. This was such good experience for Meri that she has worked for many years, off and on, in the auto dealership world.

She had a nice neat little house with a well-kept yard. When Ian and Marissa were living with her, Ian was in his organic gardening phase. He plowed up an ever larger portion of the back yard. His mother-in-law would occasionally mention that she wanted to keep the grass, but somehow it would disappear in favor of peppers or pumpkins. She would make a joke about it when we visited, but it never became a situation where she drew the line and insisted on getting her turf back. After he moved away and was no longer returning to work in the garden, she happily, with no fanfare, got the back yard returned to a classy, green area - with no cucumber vines creeping past the defined edges. She even put in a fancy walk and covered deck.

Whenever we visited Southern CA after we moved across the country to Baltimore, Lorenza would always invite us to a restaurant meal. It was something we looked forward to, as she was good at finding different places from the few we knew. We have had many a relaxed time catching up over a delicious meal with excellent service. We will definitely miss this the next time we travel there. It won’t be the same without Lorenza.

SHE ALWAYS MADE US FEEL WELCOME
Bob Murdock

I always enjoyed visiting with Lorenza, either at her house or at a restaurant. When we lived in Downey, CA we would occasionally find an excuse to stop by her house on Izetta Avenue. "Hi, we are coming to pick up Sean," we would say. "Good, I will get some coffee ready," said Lorenza. Her coffee was always good, always Folgers, and always accompanied by pastries or other goodies.

It wasn't just the refreshments, but also the conversation that was enjoyable. Lorenza had a quick wit and a good sense of humor, and could talk about any subject, even any problem, in a light vein. If we needed cheering up about anything, that was the place to go. She truly made us feel at home.
