A Day to Remember - - By Meredith Murdock

Carrie hung up the phone slowly. Well, this was definitely going to be an interesting day. Imagine Jessie Ryan calling her up after twelve years! After changing into jeans and a t-shirt, Carrie left to meet her friend at the Disneyland Hotel.

She walked into the lobby and recognized her old friend instantly. "My God, Jessie, you still look eighteen! What's your secret?"

Jessie walked over and gave her shoulder a squeeze. "You're just seeing me as you remember." She looked Carrie in the eye and continued, "I was afraid you wouldn't come after what I did to you."

Carrie paused before answering. "It was a very long time ago."

They had stopped speaking to each other after Carrie found out that Jessie was seeing Carrie's boyfriend behind her back. They graduated from high school a few months later and then Jessie moved away to New York. They hadn't seen or communicated with each other since.

Jessie's voice pulled Carrie back from her painful memories. "Yes, it was a long time ago and I am -no longer the same selfish brat. I want you to know I'm really sorry I hurt you."

Carrie smiled. "I believe you. Let's go have fun like we used to. We'll go on ALL the good rides."

The next day Carrie realized she had never asked for Jessie's phone number. She called the hotel to catch her before she left but the clerk said there was no record of a Jessie Ryan. Jessie's parents still lived in town so Carrie found their number in the phone book and called them up.

"Hello'?"
"Hello, Mrs. Ryan. This is Carrie Conners."
"Carrie'? Jessie's friend?"
"That's right. The reason I called is that I was hoping to get her current phone number from you."

There was silence for a moment. Mrs. Ryan's voice was very quiet. "Honey, I guess you didn't hear what happened - Jessie was hit by a drunk driver in New York two days ago," then her voice broke. "Carrie, she's gone."

After telling her how sorry she was, Carrie hung up in shock. Jessie, dead? And if Jessie died two days ago then how could she have been at Disneyland yesterday? She suddenly remembered taking pictures that day so she grabbed the film and hurried to the nearby one hour photo lab.

When she got them back she found that the images of Jessie were blurry and unclear.
