Hollywood returns to Cooperstown May 11-12 as the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum welcomes an all-star lineup, featuring legendary filmmaking siblings Penny and Garry Marshall, for a slate of activities to commemorate Mother's Day Weekend with a salute to the 10th anniversary of the motion picture release of "A League of Their Own." | Penny Marshall |
Penny Marshall, who served as Director and Executive Producer of "A League of Their Own," brother Garry, who played the league's mythical first president in the film, actor Jon Lovitz, who portrayed scout Ernie Capadino, actress Lori Petty, who portrayed mythical pitcher Kit Keller and actress Tracy Reiner, who portrayed Betty Spaghetti will be the honored guests of an exclusive Friends of the Hall of Fame members dessert reception on Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Gallery. The event will be emceed by nationally renowned entertainment critic Jeffrey Lyons and will feature a 40-minute roundtable discussion as well as a short question-and-answer session as part of the reception. Additionally, several members of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League are scheduled to return to Cooperstown for the event. |
Ten years ago, "A League of Their Own" was released nationwide, starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and Garry Marshall in a portrayal of the AAGPBL season with the Rockford (Ill.) Peaches, bringing great recognition to the efforts of women in Baseball. The Baseball Hall of Fame is featured prominently at the beginning and end of the picture. Additionally, much of the movie was filmed at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. |

Additionally, a variety of activities will take place throughout the weekend. Penny Marshall, who authored an essay in Baseball As America: Seeing Ourselves Through Our National Game, will participate in a pair of book signing sessions 1-3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday to sign copies of Baseball As America, the companion book to the Baseball Hall of Fame's national exhibition tour. On Sunday, visitors are invited to play a game of "catch" in Cooper Park with members of the AAGPBL. Admission to events of May 11 and 12 are included with admission to the Museum, except for the Saturday night reception, which costs $5 and is open exclusively to Friends of the Hall of Fame members. Non-member visitors can purchase memberships in the Friends of the Hall of Fame program by calling the membership department of the Baseball Hall of Fame at 888-HALL-OF-FAME or by registering online. |
