In Loving Memory
Charles Louis Broadhurst, Jr.
June 16, 1932 - Oct. 8, 2004

Charles Louis Broadhurst, Jr. (Chuck), of Cresskill, N.J., was born on June 16, 1932, in Burrton, Kansas, to loving parents Charles Broadhurst, Sr. and Myrtle Laws Broadhurst. The youngest of a large farm family, Chuck grew up near Bentley, Kansas, and later attended schools in Halstead. Having received scholarships in both music and football, he entered Wichita State University. At the encouragement of the vocal faculty, he chose to pursue a career in music. In 1955, Chuck married Janice Darlene Seward of Leon, Kansas, a fellow music student with whom he had sung several leading roles for the university's opera department. Upon graduation from Wichita State University, the couple relocated to the New York City area, and Chuck enjoyed an active career as a tenor soloist with professional organizations such as the New York City Opera Company and the Men of Song for Columbia Artists Management. His leading roles included Tamino (The Magic Flute), Count Almaviva (The Barber of Seville), Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann), Ferrando (Cosî fan tutte), Vashek (The Bartered Bride), Rodolfo (La Bohéme), Nanki-Poo (The Mikado), and Mr. Snow (Carousel). Chuck also served as tenor soloist in various churches, including Marble Collegiate Church, N.Y.C. (with Norman Vincent Peale), and First Presbyterian Church of Englewood, N.J. (with Joseph Coutret). Following his professional performance career, Chuck pursued his love of teaching. He became the Head of the Choral Department at Saddle Brook High School, Saddle Brook, N.J., where he also directed the annual musical productions. After thirty years of teaching, he retired in 1994.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Janice Seward Broadhurst; son, Jeffrey Alan Broadhurst; daughter, Laura Lynn Broadhurst; sisters June Polson and Darlene Veith of Wichita, Kansas, and Betty Beck of Farmington Hills, Michigan; brothers Melvin Broadhurst of Sedgwick, Kansas, and Marvin Broadhurst of Napa, California; loving friends, colleagues, and students.
