Rufous Hummingbird
|
Hummingbirds are highly specialized birds, with tongues shaped like long, narrow straws or brushes to collect nectar and a distinctive hovering flight that provides access to flowers, as well as causing them to "hum".
They have also developed extraordinary methods of conserving energy, including a night-time torpor that slows their normal heart beat of 1,260 beats a minute to only 50 beats a minute. Because of this they live quite long for an animal with a high metabolism--hummers of twelve years old are recorded.
There are more species of hummingbirds in the world than of any other bird.
