Tonight is so Cool It is so cool tonight that it reminds me of our high school football games, weine roasts, dates when the boyfriend would put his arm around you or give you his coat or sweater to keep you warm. I was on the pep squad at school and went to the home games only. Daddy frowned on me going to out of town games. We wore white long sleeved v-neck sweaters and a green kick-pleated skirts. Didn't wear coats, regardless of the temp, it would hide the uniforms. We assisted the cheerleaders with the cheers. I knew diddly squat about football but had fun anyway. I remember looking at the score board everytime the spectators yelled and cheered just to see if we scored. One weine roast, it was a way back in the hills and country. It was so cold that we would all pile in the cars to warm then go out and roast the hot dogs and go back to the cars to eat them. Drive in movies were fun in the fall too. Good snuggling weather huh! I loved those cool nights at the drive in. I loved getting dressed in wool skirts and sweaters, bobby soxs, loafers or those oxford shoes. Remember those car coats, heavy bulky with a hood? Kept you warm and they were the popular coat of my teens. I worked at the A&W drive in then too. It was so much fun and oh the boys you met and the fun of working outside in the winter months...your hands froze even wearing gloves.....your legs froze too, couldn't wear slacks that first winter I worked there. The cool breeze that is coming through the windows just sparked some good memories and thought I would share them before the memory faded again into the past. Lee Thanks for the memories Lee, Some of them did ring a bell but when I was in high school it was during WW2, and it was different in some ways. No bon fires, for sure. No one had cars cause they couldn't get gas or tires. Needed food stamps to get hot dogs, so the families needed to use the stamps for their own use. so things were a little different, and a lot of us worked after school and on weekends cause there was such a shortage of help. We did have a lot of fun though. Did wear plaid pleated skirts, knee high socks to match our sweaters, saddle shoes or penny loafers. Would be nice for that style to come back instead of the way girls dress today. haha, tell the grands that. Vi Lee we sure must of been in same area of country. We lived on farm and had pumpkin fields as well as everything ele. We as teenagers always had the weiner roast in our pastures. I remember when I was 3 years younger than my brother and he had his team buddies there and I thought that was neat. some girls were jealous because I got to the parties and then they didn't. Of course it was not as much fun when my big brother and younger bro. 4 years younger got to go to mine. We seemed to be the ones that had all the fun on the farm. Vel I enjoyed reading all of the post about everyones High School days. I was in High School during the late 60's early 70's you know the time of peace, love , and rock'n roll. So we mostly dressed in blue jeans, tie dye tee shirts, and poncho's. ,shoes,,,,sandals or tennis shoes...living only an hour away from San Francisco,..well we did have alot of flower children in my school. Oh yea..if your coming to San Francisco be sure to wear a flower in your hair..... Susan Oh boy Lee, your post sure did spark a lot of memories for me too. I remember one time that I had a party in the lot back behind our house. We had a bon fire, roasted hot dogs, and sat around the fire and talked for hours. One of the boys had asked me what he should wear when I invited him. I told him, "Oh, just wear sporty clothes". He showed up that night wearing a sports coat, dress slacks, and a tie. We all had a good laugh, then he went home to change clothes. Carol I REMEMBER A LOT OF THOSE THINGS TOO LEE.PLUS FALL HAYRIDES TO MEROM BLUFF FOR OUR WEINIE ROASTS.SO MUCH FUN.ACTUALLY MY KIDS HAD THOSE HAYRIDES TOO (WE'RE COUNTRIFIED) I HAVE GONE ON TWO AS AN ADULT.ONE WAS AT HALLOWEEN MY SON'S CHURCH ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO AND THEN JUST A FEW YEARS AGO WE CELEBRATED MY OLDEST GRANDDAUGHTER'S GRADUATION FROM BUSINESS COLLEGE WITH ONE.HAYRIDES ARE STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN THE MIDWEST. Shirley Lee....Everything you have in your post took me back to those days in high school as if we attended the same school... My class had our 50th reunion last week-end and we relived many of the same things you wrote about...It was a wonderful reunion with lots of memories .. Seems thats all I have been thinking about all week....Thanks for sharing.. Patsy Our nites are getting cooler here too, we still have a few pretty warm days but they are still welcome ( grin ) You folks brought back some pretty great memories, Altho' I have never lived in a really rural area I love to hear the stories of Hay rides etc... Being more of a senior that most of you here, it's interesting to look back and compare what little it took to keep people interested and happy..Times are so different now, people are bored if they aren't entertained. Kath Lee, Sounded like you had fun regardless of the weather. I was a majorette one year. In those days, too, no slacks and mini skirt. I, like, froze to death. I think I still have that uniform. I have no desire to go back and do it again. Sarah |
