My very first perm was with the electric rods.....I was just a little older than that little girl. It looks worse then it was. The perms were tight and sometimes kinky. But my hair was so straight and stringy I beg my mother for curles and I got them...lol

Yes I certainly do. Got my first one of those torture perms at the age of 5. It burned my head.

Oh yes, do I remember those. LOL I remember one time when I was little, the lady had just gotten my hair all hooked up to the machine and it came up a big thunderstorm and she had to unplug it.And we had to wait for the storm to get over before finishing my perm. LOL

I was about 5 or 6 years old the first time I saw one. I had gone to the beauty shop with my aunt to get her hair cut. A lady was getting a perm and I was so fascinated with that machine, I went home and attached strings to a box and put pinch clothes pins on the ends of the strings. that was my perm machine. But nobody would let me work onthem, I think that was when I decided to be a hairdresser. I never had a perm with one though. My first perm was a Toni. And it was awful!!!

I SURE DO!!! HAD FIRST ONE WHEN I WAS IN 5TH GRADE. I LOOKED IKE A PIECE OF STEEL WOOL. CRIED MY EYES OUT ALL WEEKEND AND WENT TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY AND HAD PICTURES TAKEN AND CRIED MORE. SECOND TIME I WAS 40 PLUS YEARS OLD AND SAME THING. ONLY THIS TIME I HAD HAIR CUT SO SHORT IT CUT IT ALL OFF. NEVER AGAIN AND NEVER WILL HAVE A PERMANENT AGAIN.

YES, YES. What a nightmare they were. The operator had to stand there and cool the hot spots, but when she missed you were left with a burn or two. I was always afraid that there would be a quake, and there I would be. Next came home perms. I gave them to myself and my daughters, but if you didn't keep windows open you could choke with the fumes. I finally gave up and went to Beauty shops.

I don't remember ever getting a perm with one. But I do remember seeing one in the beauty shop. When we first moved here 27 years ago I got several uni-perms. It was on the same order, but the clips weren't hooked to wires. They were heated on a machine & then clipped on the perm rods. They were the best perms I ever had & lasted a lot longer than any perm I have ever had. My beauty operator still has the machine, but I guess the perms are no longer made.

That was the only kind they had when I was a young adult. I cant imagine giving a child one of those! I hated them and I am sure they hating doing it as it was constantly burning my scalp and they had to try to find the spot by moving the rods witha wand-like stick. I forget when the cold perms started . They were a great relief but never permed my hair. I still have a problem and there is only one shop that can give me one that will stay past the first shampoo!

I never had a perm. Didn't even go to salon to have my hair cut until after my 1st son was born. I had long hair to waist and it was curly. I did try in high school "Curl Free" almost ruined my hair. I always wanted straight hair.
