Halloween Memories

Do any of you remember any particular fun or odd Halloween from when you were a child ?? I just found a very old snapshot of me --at about 11 pr 12 yr old. I had forgotten all about --making a paper mache mask --that went over my head --for a weird witch face !! Did it over a big balloon & then popped the balloon & painted the face up. Wish we had of owned a better camara back then I was quite a conversation piece at our school party! Went to a one-room country school. Shirley Jean.

My brother and I went trick or treating every year by ourselves from the time I was 9 or ten until I was 13 ......then felt I was too old for such things. He is 3 yrs younger than I am. We never had store bought costumes, in fact I doubt if we knew there was such a thing. We always dressed up in what ever garb we could find at home. Our trick or treat sack was just a paper grocery sack. We would leave the house around 6pm.......had to eat supper first.......then it was off to raid the town. There was not too many streets we did not cover. Had to meet Daddy at grandma's before 10pm or 9pm if it was a school night. We were familiar with all of the areas of our little town. Back then it was safe to roam the streets on Halloween.
When we got home, we would dump our candy on the floor and divide it into types of candy. Once I got something wrapped in tin foil........big ham bone. Threw that out. Our candy would last for months......not allowed to eat too much each day. Of course mom and daddy would help us eat it too. Daddy loved the candy bars......Mom did too but would eat the other stuff also.
One year I wore high heels with my get-up. Never again would I do such a stupid thing again. Feet sore for days. Thanks for bringing back some fun times in my life. Lee

I don't have many childhood memories of my own.. But I sure remember some of my kids and grands.. I guess one the the funniest was when I fixed our youngest to look like the "Hulk" (on tv) I put green food coloring all over him.. Looked great! But OMG!! It was awful to get off!! He was green for a week..

I especially loved getting my grand daughters dressed up.. We went to the thrift store and got really nice dresses and then I would cut them down to fit and put makeup on them.. They loved it and so did I. MaryLynn

My best memories of Halloween are after our kids were grown up and gone. One time Doug dressed up as a boy scout and I dressed up as a p.g. girl scout. We still have close friendship with the same neighbors, as when we first moved into our house. Still party with all of them. I love that. Barbara

When Leigh Ann was a little over two yrs old, I took her trick or treating. She was Casper the Ghost. I only took her in our neighborhood so she would know the people and not meet any strangers. She cried the first two times and I had to say trick or treat for her. By the third house, she said tick or teet by herself. After she saw that she was getting candy and treats at every house, she was now having fun. She cried when it was time to go home. She talked for days about "tick or teet". Lee

Wow, Shirley Jean, you made me dig deep for these Halloween memories. There was no "trick or treating" in those days. But there was a community Halloween parade and a contest for the best costume. Mom always made our costumes and they were always saved from year to year. With 5 kids there was always a costume that would fit or a new one was make. At least one of kids always won a prize, but can't remember now what the prizes were. Seem to me it was money.

Another memory: One year when I was working, there was a conference at the State Capitol during Halloween. Hundred of people there and we were asked to wear costumes. I and the husband of a girl I worked with dressed as an old Grannie and Gramp ready to go to bed. We both wore old long gowns. He carried a "slop jar" with water and a corn cob in it and I carried an old fashioned candle. Of course, we played the part, stooped over and hardly able to walk and hanging on to each other. We were quite the hit. It was fun and I don't know how we had the nerve to to it. Sarah

Oh, we had the appropriate nightcaps on, too. Sarah

One of our neighbors who had grown kids always had a party for all the kids in the neighborhood..it was great fun!! We bobbed for apples and played all kinds of games and had lots and lots of treats. Mother always made our costumes and we had new ones every year. Have lots of great memories with our grandkids also. Dorie

I ENJOYED IT AS A CHILD. HAD A STORE BOUGHT COSTUME A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT MOSTLY HOMEMADE.THE YEAR I WAS 14 MOTHER LET ME DESS AS A BRIDE IN HER WHITE LACE GRADUATION DRESS.I DIDN'T TRICK OR TREAT THAT YEAR THOUGH.I WAS CONSIDERED TOO OLD FOR THAT BUT WAS IN THE BIG HALLOWEEN PARADE DOWN TOWN AND WE RECEIVED REALLY GOOD TREATS AT THE TOWN GYM AFTER.BIG CANDY BARS,APPLES ETC. Shirley

This is a vivid memory for me, we wre young newly weds and my MIL had a family get together. There were 13 in my husbands family my Hubby beiing the youngest..so whenever there was a group together it was a party...All the kds were dressed up in costume ( grandkids,) and a few of the adults.

My husband had to work late that nite so he arrived late I had gone alone so he had no clue as to my costume, nor I his.. So we were both as srprised as the rest...

He had powered his hair so it was nearly white, and wore a long beard. borrowed a suitcoat 5 sized too big, was bare foot, and came hobbling in on a cane...Looked totally unlike my honey...Sure looked funny tho'.

I fund a top hat of my Dad's, and made a full flowing mask that came past my shoulders out of a nut-brown colored piece of cloth, sewed real peanut shells on it, made some black shiny "spats" and went as "Mr Peanut"..even painted his black monical on the mask...No one knew me cause they couldn't see the face.

The hardest part was keeping my BIG MOUTH shut, for the entire evening till my Hubby arrived..

They would have recognized my voice I'm sure..Haha..he didn't know me either..But I sure fooled everyone.. Kath

Loved reading about the Halloween memories. It seemed like it always rained every year & it was a cold rain. We never had store bought costumes, we dressed up in things from home. I dressed up as a Gypsy one time & my Mom had let me wear a pr. of her earrings. Unfortunately, I lost one during the trick or treating. She wasn't mad tho. We used to get lots of candy & that sure was a treat to us kids, because we very seldom ever got any candy. Our family was very poor.

When I was about 22, my Mom & I dressed up like hobo's. We went to the gas station trick or treating, where my brother Charlie worked. There was a candy case & when he told us to point out what kind of candy we wanted, we pointed to everything, LOL. He was getting a bit frustrated & told us to take our masks off and he would give us some candy. We kept the masks on til we almost made him angry. He sure was fooled when we took off the masks & he found out it was his own Mom & sister. I'll never forget that & I bet he hasn't either. Mary Jane

Do you know, I can't remember Halloween as a child..We went out on Thanksgiving.."Anything for Thansgiving?" We felt rich if we got a penny..Usually it was an apple. Mimi
