Last year at the Burton Cotton Gin Festival we saw some lightening bugs and I got busy explaining to the grandsons about Lucerifase and how the bug makes light. Cameron took my hand and said "Grandfather! You're a scientist right?" I stopped my scientific chatter and said "yes, why?" Cameron then said "Well I guess you know just about eveything about how things work but you probably don't know why." "True" I said. He said, "Well God made them so we can see them and know God made them." Then, right then I once again saw those bugs like I did when I was a young kid.

OH HOW I USED TO LOVE TO CATCH LIGHTENING BUGS. THEY WERE JUST SO FASCINATING TO WATCH. AMAZING WHAT GOD HAS CREATED.

When I was young, lightning bugs were an expected part of summer. My brother and I would have our jars ready. We chased the bugs and caught what we could. They lit up the jars in the darkness of our bedroom. I watched them until I fell asleep. When morning came they were almost dead and had to let them go.
One summer evening a gang of us kids were chasing the lightning bugs and we were running around hollering and laughing. Well one of them or something flew into my mouth. Gag, gag it tasted awful. I can still recall that horrible taste.

I can't tell you how many years since I have seen a lightening bug. It was the last time I was in Ill. My cousin and I, chased the bugs and filled a jar full. I then tried to bring them back home. Of course, they all died. My cousin died too, not long after that.

A couple of years ago, we were in Spokane,Id. and my daughter-in- law was taking us in the nicest shops. I saw this statue of a little boy ( in overalls) holding a glass jar with lighting bugs flashing. I said "Oh, I have got to have that" It reminded me of catching those bugs with my cousin" My daughter-in-law,looked at the price tag and said " Its $4,000. Needless to say I didn't buy it.

At that price you should have bought all of us one. Ha! It would have been nice to have a little something like that to remind us of our happy and care free childhood. It would also serve as a reminder to those with CRS syndrome.

When we had our camper trailer, my son was about 9 yrs old, one nite the adults were sitting around the campfire, the young ones were chasing fireflies with the mason jars, Then I noticed the boys were all hunched down over the jars a few yards away, they were pretty QUIET...which is enough to ALERT any parent..Then they'd start to giggle..
When I went over to watch them ...they had captured a frog and were feeding it the fireflies, and watching them "Blink" "Blink" all the way down to his tummy..
I was horrified, but the frog was a "happy camper" , he just sat there... Poor little fireflys, but I guess it was a natures lesson learned..

I think I have told you my lighting bug story before. But here goes again.
Where we lived in Texas there were no lighting bugs. My kids hadn't seen any until we moved to Nebraska. One night my 2nd son decided he wanted to sleep out side in the old open corn crib. Suddenly he came flyig in the house all excited and scared. "Somebody is throwing firecrackers at me and they aren't going off". It was lighting bugs. We sure got a laugh. I think the next time I talk to him I will see if he remembers.
