remember then?

Saturday was a busy time when I was growing up. There was grocery shopping, going to the afternoon matinee to see the latest cowboy movie or horror show, perhaps getting to eat supper at a cafe in town (which was rare and such a treat). When I grew to be a teen, I walked to town and met my girlfriends and we would go up and down the main street, window shop, get a soda or hamburger at one of the cafes and watch for boys.

I enjoyed my Saturdays growing up. Then Saturday night, the big night of dating. If you didn't have a date for Saturday night, well that just wasn't heard of in those days. Dates would take you to the movies or rather the drive in (wished that we still had them) or he would take you to the local hangout where all your class mates soon gathered.

At home you could tell it was Saturday night by Momma's supper. She always fixed hamburger meat patties, fried potatoes, corn and open a can of pork n' beans. In fact you could tell what day of the week was by her meals at supper time.

Sometimes on Saturday night, the whole neighborhood (kids) would come over to our house, sit outside in the summer to listen to the lastest hits on a transistor radio (remember them, I sure went through a lot of 9 volt batteries). Or we would talk, tell our dreams of what we would do when we grew up, who was dating who, so on and so forth.

Why did we ever have to grow up?

That brought back some memories. I lived in a very small town--except for Sat night --the sidewalks rolled up early !!

Everyone shopped on Sat night it seemed. No stores open on Sundays. Us girls did walk up & dow the street & the boys cruised by in cars if they had any. for awhile we had a town movie & I sure watched a lot of those Sat shows--good old Roy Rogers !! Then we lost the movie there. Had to go 7 miles to next town. But by then I was a teen ager & drive -ins were the thing to do on dates. Or roller skateing rinks. In summer we had a tent roller rink in our little town & thats where I met my first husband.

I remember a popcorn wagon in town open on Sat nights too --anyone remember those ??

Lee, thanks for sharing your Saturdays..I didn't have such a terrific teen time when I look back on it. But we went to war, the guys were gone, and I was too young to show up at the USO. Earlier years there were house parties..I didn't go "steady", and I had a lot of friends, but all from different groups.

I remember a girlfriend in the days before implants, who was very pretty and sexy, but had a flat chest. She stuffed her bra with toilet paper. One day at the beach, the paper got wet. Someone had thrown her in the water, which she evaded..She came out onto the sand with one flat breast and one still inflated..

When I was a child, my Dad took us dancing quite often. Also, we had friends that came from town on Saturday nights; we played cards and made ice cream.

When I was 9 yrs old, I lived in Springfield, Ill. My girlfriend and I,used to play with our dolls, on the State Capital building lawn. It was just a few blocks from our homes. I wonder if they would let you do that now?
