BITS AND PIECES SCAVENGED FROM EXPERIENCE

Symptom: Alarm for sample conditioning failure red on screen in control room screen
Local observation: Flow to analyzer is off. Red alarm for moisture sensor is on.
Reasoning of design:Pump is shut off if moisture is sensed so that water is not pumped to the analyzer where it can destroy components.

Fix: TURN OFF SAMPLE PUMP. Disconnect the moisture sensor from tee and dry with paper towel. Alarm light should go out. If not, wet corner of towel and scrub sensor end and then dry. Conductive salt will occassionally bridge and act like moisture. If red light still doesn not go off after repeat of previous steps call M&C in California for advice and help
TURN ON SAMPLE PUMP.

DOCUMENT PROBLEM AND REPAIR IN BOOK

Visible evidence:
A red alarm light beside one or more of the icons displayed on the SCS.
CO is not be displayed in either the “TREND” or “HISTORICAL TREND” screens.
Reasoning of design:
A failure in a monitored portion of the Sample Conditioning System causes the Data System to “lock-out” the CO values so that a failure will not result in a fuel cut-off. This also prevents use of values to show in CEM calibration screen upper left portion. But Cal rpt may be acceptable.
Fix:
Alarms are generally caused by moisture or chiller not cold enough. Moisture will be visible in rotometer. TURN OFF SAMPLE PUMP. CLEAN and Dry rotameters with water and methanol. Use air or cabinet purge to dry rotameters after cleaning.

Symptom or Visible evidence:
The Oxygen concentration is higher than operational parameters show it should be. Usually the Oxygen will have crept higher over a period of hours.

Reasoning of design:
Pluggage at the primary filter or SS nipple will allow air to be pulled into the analyzer train.

Fix:
Inspect the SS nipple and primary filter and replace if necessary. If the SS nipple is plugged but still in good physical condition soak in water and wash out the solids and air dry. Then return dried nipple to parts depot in analyzer.

Symptom or Visible evidence:
When repairing or otherwise servicing the sample conditioning system there are no power lights on front panel after reconnecting power.
Reasoning of design:
Many of the functions of the sample conditioning system are sequenced by the computer.
Fix:
Connect the ribbon cable connecter to the plug on back of the system provided there are no blown fuses.

Symptom or Visible evidence: 1/15/2003
Low flow with pulsing on right hand flow meter coupled with smell of SO2 everytime the analyzer cabinet was opened. After extensive troubleshooting I discovered the plastic tubing into the bottom fitting had slipped out and was just drafting causing pulsing and low flow.

Pluggage or restriction in the primary filter, connections, and sample line may be checked by carefully disconnecting the sample line from chiller in cabinet and noting sample flow as shown on flow meters. A large increase in flow indicates a plug between the sample probe and the chiller.
