Cleaning the Boiler #4 CEM Air Conditioner

The air conditioner on top of the Boiler #4 CEM analyzer system is there to assure that the temperature of the cabinet remains low enough that the M&C Sample Conditioning Peltier Cooler can always lower the temperature of the waste gas to 4°C or less. This is to prevent moist gas or water getting to the mirrored surface in the Oxygen paramagnetic analyzer. The water would be acidic and would etch the reflective coating from the mirror.

Hidden behind the stainless tubing and on top of the cabinet is the air conditioner. The aluminum mesh filter is on the left in this picture.

The schedule is an approximate guideline for cleaning of the filter. It can be cleaned while the unit is running. Cross through the next nearest empty date and write the date cleaned and initial it.

Loosen the set screw at the top of the filter holder assembly. Lift the filter and swing the bollom out of the trough.

  • Put enough warm water to completely immerse the filter into a container large for the filter to lay flat.
  • Add the recommended amount of a detergent such as "Micro" and let soak for about 10 minutes.
  • Remove from soapy water and rinse well.
  • Carefully squirt acetone, Caution very Flammable, onto the filter to rinse off water and speed evaporation. A light fanning action will dry faster.
  • Take the filter outside into a well ventilated dry area and spray with "DURO All-Purpose Spray Adhesive" on both sides. True Value™ Hardware on Uvalde carries the product. Follow the recommendations to assure complete coverage. The spray traps dust and fibers and makes the filter more efficient.
  • Replace the filter into the trough and lighty snug the set screw.
