I was medication nurse on the cancer floor. One of the patients, female,
was complaining of pain. Her pain med was a shot of Demerol. I walked
into her room and she was sitting up in bed. I told her to lie on her
side so I could adminster her medication. She did as told. She asked if
I could give it without hurting her. I told her sure. I told her to
squeeze her toes together real tight as that will relax the hip muscles.
I asked her "Are your toes squeezed tight?" She said yes. I pulled back
the covers just uncovering her hip and gave the injection. I asked her
if it hurt, she said no. She then proceeded to pull the covers off of
her. There she was in plain view. She was a double amputee.
Talk of feeling like a fool. She laughed so hard that she peed in the
bed. From then on until discharge, she asked for me to give her the
shots. She always said "My toes are squeezed tight"
