This took place on the day shift on the cancer floor. I had 6 to 8
patients to care for that day. One patient in particular comes to mind.
He is here for chemo tx. after his surgery for cancer of the colon (I
think). As soon as I got out of report from the night shift, I always
made rounds to check on my patients. I knocked on the patients door, and
went in. The first thing I noticed was how handsome this man is. I
checked all of his dressings, vital signs, etc. I told him that the
doctor wanted him to be out of bed as much as possible today and try to
walk in the hall. I told him I would be back as soon as the am care was
started. He moaned and said he didn't think that it would be possible to
get out of bed. I told him that I would give him a pain med so getting
up would hurt less. I left the room and finished my rounds. I issued linens to my other patients and would save the handsome man for last so I could spend more time with him. I finished and was headed for his room when I saw him dressed in street clothes ( we refer to regular clothes as street clothes) He was walking steady. I walked up to him told him I was glad to see he was walking so well. He just gave a big smile and said he was feeling fine. I told him that I would be coming to his room to check on him. Thirty minutes passed and I went to his room to see how he felt after walking in the hall. I opened the door and he was sitting in the chair. Something moving out of the corner of my eye made me turn around. Oh My God, he was still in the bed. I had seen his TWIN walking in the hall. Talk about turning beet red, I sure did. They all thought that it was funny. The walking brother told the patient what I had said to him in the hall. Thanks Goodness they both had a sense of humor. |
