Sometimes nursing is one of the saddest professions. The inability to
help some to get well, the children who die whether due to illness or
abuse.....accidents etc. Unable to help those who pray and pray for
healing and you know that their illness is the boss of their life.
Getting so close to your patients that when one dies, it is like losing
your family member or closest friend. A man came in for tests because he was spitting up blood. The results came back lung cancer. Treatable......caught in the early stages. He said that he knew that he would be cured but wanted to go home and take care of some personal business and come back for treatment. One hour after he left, his doctor called and informed us that the patient went home and killed himself. Never will understand why he did not give the treatments a chance. I guess he too had an inner voice telling him the treatments would not work or he was afraid to die of cancer or what the treatments might do to him. Chemo usually makes you sicker than the illness. You sit and talk with someone about getting well. They tell you their hopes and dreams. They open the inner most private parts of their lives to you and then Pow their life is over. Makes one wonder what else you could have said to him. |
