One night while working the night shift, we were kept busy with
answering patient's call lights. As usual we were working short handed.
On coming back to the nursing station, we discovered that the door to
the medication room was open and the lights on. Inside we found a
scroungy looking male in late teens or early 20's going through patients
med drawers. In the drawers were just routine medications like lasix, potassium etc. I asked him what did he think he was doing. He was hunting for narcotics. The charge nurse told him to come out and he refused. She went in the room while I notified security. She grabbed him by the ear and drug him out of the room and made him sit in a chair. The security officer and a local policeman came to the floor and arrested him. The charge nurse still standing over so he could not get out of the nurse's station while awaiting for the police. The police officer searched him and found a knife with a blade of about 12 inches long. The charge nurse turned a deathly shade of white. I thought that she was going to pass out. When you stop and think of the danger we were put in, it is a wonder he did not pull the knife on us or worse yet kill us. Some times in an emergency situation you just don't stop and think of what could have happened. That night God and all of out Guardian Angels were with us and kept us safe. |
