Good News
I took care of this wonderful woman for several months after her diagnosis of cancer. She was always cheerful and very pleasant to be around. I can't remember how many courses of chemo or radiation she had gone through. She and her husband were very devoted to each other. You felt their love and the love for God when you entered her room. On her last admission to the hospital, she was so ill. The doctor had no good news for her this time, no further chemo or radiation. All tests showed the cancer was back and was spreading rapidly.

I went with the doctor when he told her that she would not live out the week. Instead of crying, she looked up at the doctor and said "Thank you". She was tired of an neverending battle and was ready to go. That very afternoon, she asked me to help her to make a long distance call to her mother who lived in some northern state. She told me that when her mother answered, to turn her tape recorder on for her. She told her Mother that she had received good news from the doctor and that she only had a few days left to live. By this time, her mother was crying. She told her Mother that she had one last request of her. She wanted her Mother to sing Amazing Grace to her like she always did when she was sick as child. Her wish was requested and answered. After that, she played the recording often. This brave lady will always be an inspiration to me. She faced death as gallant as a soldier fighting a battle he knew he might not win.

She passed away quietly two days after the doctor gave her the "Good News".
