I can remember the Somers Point police car way back in very early 30's.
You had to crank it and there was a choke. My dad used to crank it and I
remember him putting me in the front seat and telling me to pull the
choke, of course back in those days we learned fast, haha, It was ugly
black and no markings on it. It might have been a model A. Can't
remember the difference between an A and a T. I also remember riding in
a rumble seat of a car that needed to be cranked. We didn't own a car
back in the early thirtys, but I remember we had a 1932 buick but that
wasn't til 1938. It was 4 door, a neat car. stick shift. I used to
watch my dad drive when I was allowed to sit up front. We had it for
years. When I was 12, I took it out for a drive around the block. Oh my
gosh, was I scared, it kept jumping and jerking, when I would leave out
the clutch. Of course no one was around and you didn't need a key, it
just had a switch. By the time I was 14 I could really drive good,
unbeknowns to my parents. haha. Never thought of the danger, but don't
think there were 1800 people in the whole town. Icould tell a few more
stories about those years but woud take too much space. Maybe will
later. It was so much fun. No, I never got caught.
