In Amsterdam there will be a "Free Leonard Peltier-march" through a crowded city. The march starts at 12.00 pm at the Central Station and will end at the American Consulate at the Museumplein. People will carry large banners and hand out information on the Leonard Peltier case. Native Americans from Suriname (South America) and North America will participate. At the end of the march ,around 02.00 pm, there will be a short vigil in front of the Consulate. Wouter van Oorschot, a well known publisher in the Netherlands and Bruce Gurwitz, brother of the late Lew Gurwitz, will address the people. The documentary "Incident at Oglala" will be shown in a cinema theater nearby the U.S. Consulate after the demonstration.

Feb. 6, 1999 - afternoon - Wake at U.S. Embassy or protest action at international airport Zaventem (depends on how many people will come) We're also checking how many people would participate in a 48-hour hunger fast. And the petition drive has been increased via email and hopefully before February 6th via a new website (since our Internet Coordinator is having summer vacation - he lives in Australia - and complains he's bored, I'm sure the page will be finished this week... smile) More details will follow later.

We also need to know to who we have to send out our petitions to free Leonard Peltier and if there's some specific issue that you want us to insist on, etc... (we are young people and have no real exprerience about doing petitions, etc. ) I hope to hear from you soon, Take care, Christophe xXx

SAULT STE. MARIE, ONTARIO
We have one problem, a location for the Feb. 6/99, event. On Dec. 19/98, we were given the Civic Square. However, Bon Soo - the winter carnival is going on during this time period. All civic facilites are booked as are many church halls and other places. I am asking a faculty member at the local university to book a large room for us. If this fails, we will move our event to Feb. 13/99. However, PEACE magazine is putting a notice in their issue to be on the stands within a few weeks noting the Sault event and giving me as a contact number for more information. Again, our event will emphasize the need to contact the
Minister of Justice and Members of Parliament about Leonard and to urge the Justice Minister to release the report on the investigation into the original extradition from Canada to the US. He are putting pressure on our local MP to do something. Other MPs have been contacted and got back to us that they support our efforts for Leonard. We also will be handing out material on the Lubicon case.

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN
Just thought I would let you know that people in Regina, Sasktachewan, Canada are also sponsoring and event on Feb. 6 to support Leonard.
The Saskatchewan Coaliton Against Racism (S.C.A.R) is hosting a rally, informational, and petition signing at Dewdney Park. We will make sure people understand what Leonard has gone through, who he is, and learn about the Canadian governments shameful involvement in his case. Petitions will be circulated and sent to the Minister of Justice in Ottawa in regards to the fradulent extradition of Leonard from Canada, a demand for a release of the report on this matter, and a request for Leonard's immediate return to Canada as a free man! We would also like to draw a relationship between Leonard's case and Mumi Abu Jamal and the great union they have formed and the bridges they have created for people of colour.
Leonard is not forgotten. Free Leonard Peltier!

The LPSG, Atlanta is interested in participating in the fast for Leonard Peltier. So far we have around a half dozen people who have committed to fasting for four days, one person following the next. There are many people in the Indian community here that we have not called yet. I'm sure that more will be interested. We're having a meeting this coming Sunday and will know a little more about our commitment afterwards. In the mean time, please send more information, press-releases, guidelines, etc.
I talked to Arthur Miller yesterday and he said his people will be doing twelve day fasts. I'll see if anyone here is willing and able to do that. I look forward to hearing from you.

There will be a 23-hour fast beginning Feb. 6, at the Baltimore American Indian Center at118 S. Broadway. Starting at 12 noon we will have a simple, brown-bag lunch (some very basic luncheon food will be made available by the Homewood and Stony Run Friends 'Indian Affairs Committee', who are sponsoring the event) at the BAIC headquarters, and at 1pm we will begin our fast - one hour for each of the 23 years Leonard has been a political prisoner. We will break our fast on Feb. 7. At Homewood they will break at 9:30AM, due to a previously scheduled pancake breakfast. At Stony Run, we will break our fast at simple lunch, which immediately follows our 11AM Meeting for Worship. Participants are welcome to join the Quaker meetings, or may end their fast in any way they deem appropriate. It was erroneously mentioned that there will be Mayoral candidates present for the event at BAIC. BAIC has requested we NOT have any politicizing at this time, and to honor their generosity in offering their HQ building for our kick-off event, we have therefore cancelled the invitation to the Mayoral Candidates.
We would like anyone interested to email me, Nancy Miller, at .

MILWAUKEE. WI
From Milwaukee-planned march and rally for Leonard Peltier Feb. 6 The plans for Feb. 6th go well, I went to the board meeting at the Riverwest Art Center on wed. night and made sure that we'd have that space on the sixth. So far the plans are to meet in Gordon Park (Humboldt and Locust) at 1:00pm, and march to the Riverwest Art Center (Fratney and Auer) for speakers, food by Food Not Bombs, and afterwards a video showing of a movie called "Lakota Woman" which is highly accurate portrayal of the wounded knee incident. I have about 100 flyers left, and will be flyering this weekend along the route of the march, and in several places. I'll also be contacting several other students from UWM, one of whom knows a great deal on Peltier, the other on the Puerto Rican political prisoners, and asking them to speak along with myself on the 6th. What i need is help spreading the word--getting people to make concrete commitments to be there, and then getting those people to do the same. Please tell everyone with AJRC, as i know they will support this action. Attached to this email is a .jpg image of the flyer that I came up with for the march. It'd be great for someone else to copy them and distribute them at places that I don't go to often. Thanks for your help fellow worker, it deffinately makes a difference.

Rally Feb 6th to Free Leonard Peltier, American Indian Political Prisoner Join others internationally rallying for Peltier's release for outside medical care, freedom and for Senate Oversight Investigation and Hearings.
Feb. 6th is the twenty-fourth anniversary of Peltier's illegal extradition from Canada and falsely conviction. Peltier's jaw continues to cause him agony as he can eat only soft food through a straw. Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act point to a US government covert program against the American Indian Movement, but a full Senate Oversight Investigation is needed to expose the real killers and clear his name.
Join us in calling for apologies and reparations for our Original Americans, starting with the Oglala Sioux of Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

STARKVILLE, MS
My name is Roberta Salyers and I am trying to organize a demonstration (rally or candlelight vigil) at Mississippi State University (in Starkville) to mark Leonard's 23rd year in prison on the 6th of February. There are no Native American student organizations on campus, but I know that a large population of Choctaw live in Mississippi. As I have only lived here a little over a year, I do not have any contacts in the community. Could you provide me with names and numbers of other activists in the area who might be willing to come to such an event and perhaps perform a cleansing ritual or provide drums? In the past, you put me in contact with John Green, ironically another graduate student in my department. He had, however, already given up and has since moved away. Thanks for any advice or help that you may provide.

June25-27,1999 in Lawrence, Kansas
June 26th, 1999 will be the twenty-fourth anniversary of the shoot out on the Pine Ridge Reservation which lead up to the illegal incarceration of Leonard Peltier. Leonard Peltier has been in prison now for twenty-three years and as he gets older, prison policies become more and more abusive making the time more difficult for him to do. His health is deteriorating and it is important now more than ever that we pull our forces together in unity and focus all of the support and love that exists for him into a massive collective effort to gain his freedom. The LPDC will be sponsoring the Leonard Peltier Organizing Conference on June 25, 26, and 27 at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas in an effort to make this happen. The goal of the conference is to build a more effective support group network. With all of the people who have agreed to participate in panels, run work shops, and attend the conference putting their heads together to develop concrete strategies to gain freedom for Leonard Peltier, we are bound to develop a strong, successful campaign. The conference will open with traditional Lakota, David Chief and Oglala fire fight survivors, Jean Day, Jean Bordeaux Roach, and Edgar Bear Runner welcoming everyone to the conference. Panel discussion topics will include presentations on the legal status of Peltier's case, the international campaign to free Peltier, and Prison issues in general. Leonard's lawyers, Eric Seitz, Carl Nadler, Jennifer Harbury, and Ramsey Clark (invited) will be giving the presentation on the legal case which will be followed by a question and answer period. Sylvain Duez-Alesdrini, the European Peltier Support Group coordinator (tentative), Bobby Castillo, international spokesperson for Peltier, Noal Kleinman of Amnesty International (invited), and Lennox Hinds, human rights activist and lawyer for Nelson Mandela (tentative) will be giving the presentation on the status of the international campaign to free Peltier and its importance. A panel discussion on prison issues will happen in order to sensitize people to what Leonard and other prisoners are going through on a daily basis to create the sense of urgency needed to free Peltier. Ida Robinson, former political prisoner and advocate for prisoners with children, Helen Felix Baca, former Lakota prisoner and Peltier supporter, and Bobby Castillo, former Marion Control Unit prisoner who met Leonard in prison, will be giving this presentation. Jennifer Harbury, lawyer and renowned Latin American human rights activist, Ernie Stevens,Jr., president of the National Congress of American Indians, and Keith Jennings, president of the African American Human Rights Foundation, will be leading a workshop on lobbying for Leonard Peltier. They will speak on how to best lobby elected officials, NGO's, and tribal councils. There will also be a work shop on grass roots organizing that will be conducted by David Dellinger, co-defendant of the Chicago Eight and life long activist, CT Butler, co-founder of Food Not Bombs, Dr. Michael Yellow Bird, Professor of social welfare and First Nations activist, Debra Peebles, radio broadcaster and Native prisoner advocate, Arthur Miller, North West Leonard Peltier regional support group coordinator, and Dacajeweiah (Splitting the Sky also known as John Hill), ex-Attica Political Prisoner and defender of Gustafen Lake. Finally, there will be a workshop on strengthening the movement to free all political prisoners which will be lead by Sufiaya Bukari, Jericho spokesperson, Geronimo Ji Jaga, recently released Black Panther political prisoner (invited), Mary Dickinson, Jericho State Coordinator for Mondo we Langa and Ed Poindexter, Pam Africa, Friends and Family of Mumia Abu Jamal and MOVE member, Marcos Vilar, Defense Committee for Puerto Rican political prisoners and prisoners of war, Jamila Levi, companera of freedom fighter, Ray Luc Lavasseur, and Irma Muniz, wife of Raza political prisoner, Ramsey Muniz. This will include lobbying packets, the Leonard Peltier Support Group Handbook, a copy of "Incident at Oglala", a bundle of Spirit of Crazy Horse news letters, The FBI files, literature to copy, buttons, bumper stickers, T-shirts, and Leonard Peltier Support Group Banners. We will also be breaking into specific working groups where people can strategize, dialogue and plan to take responsibility for certain areas of Leonard's campaign. We hope that everyone will leave this conference with renewed inspiration and concrete ways to contribute to the campaign to free Leonard Peltier and all political prisoners. We are still at the early planning stages of this conference so your suggestions and input are welcome. You can help by organizing fund-raisers. We desperately need money to make this conference a success. You can also help by organizing buses and caravans from your areas to the conference. The more people to share expenses with the better! Haskell has both camping and dorm rooms available. Food will also be provided. We understand the financial difficulties many may have in coming to the conference and we are trying to make it affordable as possible. Plan to be in Kansas this June and register with the LPDC! PRESS STATEMENT
CAMPAIGN FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR LEOPLE PELTIER
On February 6th, Leonard Peltier solidarity marches and rallies were held in Albany (N.Y.), Victoria (B.C. Canada), Louisville (KY), Brussels (Belgium), London (England), Houston (TX), Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario, Canada), San Diego (CA), Nashville (TN), Rapid City (SD), Springfield (MA), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Washington (D.C.), Portland (Maine), Tacoma (WA), Eugene (OR), Denver (CO), Paris (France), Boston (MA), Baltimore (MD), Chicago (IL), Altanta (GA), Cincinnati (OH), Kent (OH), Lawrence (KS), Greenfield (MA), Pontiac (MI), Starkville (MS), Lima (Peru), Helsinki (Finland), Derby (England), Lincoln (NE), Jewett City (CT), Sunderland (MA), Hyannis (MA), Hilton (SC), Regina (Sacktachewan, Canada), San Francisco (CA), Milwaukee (WI), Portland (OR), Irunea-Pamploma (Spain), Bonn (Germany), Toronto (Ontario, Canada), Tampa (FL), Honolulu (HI) and State College (PA).
All these marches and rallies were held in support of the campaign for Executive Clemency, U.S. Congressional Hearings and medical treatment for American Indian Movement activist and political prisoner Leonard Peltier.
Also, on February 6th began the LEONARD PELTIER SOLIDARITY FAST/HUNGER STRIKE. The purpose of this action is to call attention to and mobilize support for the campaign for medical treatment for Leonard Peltier. There are now 67 people who have joined the fast/hunger strike across the U.S. and in Canada, France, Basque Country, Russia, Ireland, Spain and Italy. The fast/hunger strike will continue until Leonard Peltier receives the medical treatment he needs.
Over the years the government has continuously harassed Leonard in prison. Leonard is currently suffering from complications of a previous maxilla-facial surgery at the Springfield Medical Prison facility. In that surgery Leonard almost died. Not only did that surgery not improve Leonard's condition, it made it far worst. Leonard is now in continuous, excruciating pain. He cannot open his mouth enough to bite his food, nor can he even chew. Leonard, for very good reasons, does not want to go back to Springfield. The renowned maxilla-facial surgeon Doctor Keller of the Mayo Clinic has written to the prison telling them that he is willing the treat Leonard. But so far, the federal Bureau Of Prisons (BOP) has refused to let Leonard be treated. If the government, for political reasons, causes and allows a prisoner to suffer great pain, there is no other word for that than torture.
Our campaign is directed at Ms. Kathleen Hawk, Director, Bureau Of Prisons (e-mail; khawk@bop.gov or swolfson@bop.gov. 320 First St.NW, Washington, DC 20534, or fax: 202-514-6878, or phone call: 202-307-3198) and we asking that Leonard be allowed treatment by Dr. Keller at the Mayo Clinic.

Message From: dalealen@people-link.com (Dale Allen Pfeiffer) Date: Sun, Feb 14, 1999, 9:48pm (PST+3) To: peltier-fast@iww.org Subject: Attacks
Elizabeth and I both felt it was safe now to tell you a little about the attacks we have suffered in the past week since the campaign began. We have been so busy with moving, preparing for the rally and the solidarity fast, and with joining our lives together that we didn't even realize what was happening at first--not until we were suffering a full blown psychic assault.
The first thing we noticed was the roaches. Our landlord had assured us that this building was roach free. When we spotted some small ones over a week ago, our landlord had the entire building fumigated, and that seemed to put an end to it until a week ago. Suddenly roaches seemed to be pouring from the walls, small ones, big ones, black ones, white ones, thin ones, round ones. They overran the apartment even during the day, and when we would approach them, they would stand there and stare at us. They seemed to seek us out simply so they could watch us.
At about this same time, Elizabeth noticed that her hair was falling out by the handfuls. Then we realized that we were both being assailed by stabbing pains. Strange, foul odors seeped into the apartment, our eyes stung, and Elizabeth began coughing. The negativity was so thick that it was palpable. We even saw negative energy seeping into the apartment through northern corners.
Elizabeth was the first to conclude that we were suffering a psychic attack. She felt that I was the primary target, but that she was absorbing the attack in order to protect me as I fasted. Inadvertently, I mentioned over the internet how she was protecting me from attack, and the next thing we knew she was under direct attack. She was laid out on the bed, suffering most terribly. She said she had never experienced such a powerful assault. It seemed to come from many different directions, and it seemed to intensify any negativity which was already directed toward us.
I performed some minor callings using tobacco, sage and sweet grass. These served to ease the attack enough for her to recover. Early the next morning, I found myself performing ceremonies in my dreams. The following day, Elizabeth caste a shield over the house and over the two of us. We also spread salt in the corners of all the rooms, moving clockwise with prayers. And we placed basal leaves and garlic cloves in every window. I spread tobacco as well. And we burned cedar, sage and sweet grass and smudged the house and each other thoroughly. That day the negativity dissipated, Elizabeth's hair stopped falling out, the pains stopped, and the roaches disappeared.
Following this, two of our close friends who are also involved in the campaign also fell under attack and we had to help protect them. there have been some minor attacks since then, but nothing we couldn't fight off easily. Hopefully, by reporting this to the list, we will not leave ourselves open to another onslaught.
I am posting this here because I know that many of you are concerned and have been wondering what is going on here. No doubt there are some who will think that we are nuts. To them, all I can say is that they have not gone through what we have. But we have survived. Together, we are a very strong couple.
Be careful folks, but do not be scared away. We are fighting for Leonard, and I also believe we are fighting for the future. there are negative forces out there which feed from the destruction of the planet. They do not want us to succeed. Yet we are in the right, and that gives us the greatest strength.
In a cold wind, I hear the sound
of a man crying for freedom.
We are the army to set him free.
(In a warm wind, I hear the sound
of the Earth crying for love.
We are the physicians to heal her.)

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DEMANDS
THAT THE UNITED STATES
FREE POLITICAL PRISONER LEONARD PELTIER
The European Parliament passed a new resolution yesterday (February 11,
1999) reinstating their insistence that world renowned humanitarian and U.S., Indigenous political prisoner, Leonard Peltier be granted Executive Clemency and that an investigation into the improprieties of his conviction be implemented. Also included in their resolution was the insistence that Leonard Peltier receive proper medical treatment. The resolution calls on the European Parliament's delegation for relations with the United States to raise the Case of Leonard Peltier at its next meeting with its American counterparts.
This was in lieu of Amnesty International's repeated show of concern in the fairness of Peltier's trial, the US government's admission that Peltier's extradition from Canada was fraudulently obtained, the US government's violation of international humanitarian law and it's own Constitution in not allowing Peltier to receive proper medical treatment, the complete absence of evidence regarding Peltier's guilt, and Leonard Peltier's role in the defense of the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The European Parliament passed a similar resolution in December of 1994. But, because Mr. Peltier continues to reside unjustly behind bars and because his misery has been coupled by a severe medical condition, this additional resolution has been passed due to the urgency of the situation and in order to further implement steps to see that Leonard Peltier receives justice.

Please mail or better yet hand deliver your letter to the Canadian Consulate office near you. ( See addresses below ) Canadian government officials report that they are impressed at the amount of mail they are getting from Europe about the extradition report. If people in the states start to send a lot of letters to their local Canadian Consulate General's offices we may be able to get Leonard's case back into Canadian court.
SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Consulate General,
I am writing you regarding the case of U.S. Indigenous political prisoner and humanitarian, Leonard Peltier. Leonard Peltier was extradited from Canada in 1976 with the use of fraudulent affidavits which were obtained by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations. Since this time both the Canadian and U.S. governments have admitted to the fraudulent use of these affidavits to extradite Mr. Peltier from Canada.
During an appeal of Mr. Peltier's extradition in 1989, the judge recognized the affidavits to be fraudulent and inquired as to what actions the Minister of Justice would take to remedy the situation. In turn, the Minister of Justice ordered an official, independent investigation of Mr. Peltier's extradition to be held. In 1995 this investigation was completed. In June of 1998 the report from the investigation was approved from the Privacy Commission for release. Today the report has still not been released and I am writing you in hopes that you will inquire to Minister of Justice, Anne McLellan as to why she will not release the report.
Millions of people in both Canada and the U.S. as well as internationally, know of Mr. Peltier's case and the violations of international law that were made in obtaining his extradition. In turn, it is important that the report is released out of respect of human rights and international law. Please urge the Minister of Justice to release the internal report on the extradition of Leonard Peltier. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
The Canadian Embassy
