The Birth of a King

Matt.1:18-25

18. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows. When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
19. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her, desired to put her away secretly.
20. But when he had considered this, behold, and angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21. And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins."
22. Now all this took place that what was spoken by the Lord throught the prophet might be fulfilled, saying,
23."Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a Son, And they shall call His name Immanuel", which translated means, "God with us".
24. And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took her as his wife
25. and kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

Matt.2:1-15

1. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
2. "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east, and have come to worship Him."
3. And when Herod the king heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4. And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he began to inquire of them where the Christ was to be born.
5. And they said to him, "In Bethehem of Judea, for so it has been written by the prophet,
6. 'AND YOU BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH,
ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH;
FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER,
WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'"
7. Then Herod secretly called the magi, and ascertained from them the time the star appeared.
8. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said,"Go and make careful search for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, that I too may come and worship Him."

9. And having heard the king, they went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them, until it came and stood over where the Child was.
10. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

11. And they came into the house and saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him; and they presented to Him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

12. And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by another way.
13. Now when they had departed, behold, and angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying,

"Arise and take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him."
14. And he arose and took the Child and His mother by night, and departed out of Egypt;

15. and was there until the death of Herod, that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, "OUT OF EGYPT DID I CALL MY SON."

The story as told by Luke.

Luke 2:1-20

1. Now it came about in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be take of all the inhabited earth.
2. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3. And all were proceeding to register for the census, everyone to his own city.
4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
5. in order to register, along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.
6. And it came about that while they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth.
7. And she gave birth to her first-born son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

8. And in the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields, and keeping watch over their flock by night.
9. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shown around them; and they were terribly frightened.
10. And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid;

for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people;
11. for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
12. And this will be a sign to you; you will find the baby wrapped in cloth, and lying in a manger."
13. And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14. "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased."
15. And it came about when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds began saying to one another, "Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us."
16. And they came in haste and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.

17. And when they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.
18. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.
19. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.
20. And the shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.
