Campaign Trail

In 1932 Harry went to the Democratic Convention with Pendergast.

There he saw Franklin D. Roosevelt for the first time.

Roosevelt was realizing his own life-long ambition when he accepted the party's nomination.

Little known outside Missouri, 48 year old Truman let it be known that he would like to run for Governor or Congress.

In the 1934 Missouri primary, some recommended Harry to Pendergast.

"Do you mean to tell me," bellowed Pendergast,

"you actually believe that Harry Truman can be elected to the United States Senate?"

After being turned down by three other men, he finally supported Truman. Harry's opponents called him Pendergast's bellhop.

So, once again, Harry hits the campaign trail.

Harry won the vote thanks to Pendergast stuffing the ballot box. His advice to Senator Truman, when he went to Washington, was...

"Keep your mouth shut, and answer your mail."
