The year is 1944.....Place....Chicago, Illinois
Harry Truman has been chosen as the nominee for Vice President. To convince him to accept, he was invited to listen in on a pre-arranged, rehearsed phone call with Pres. Roosevelt...
"Have you got that fellow lined up yet?" asked Roosevelt. "No", he was told. "He is the contraiest @*#*&@ mule from Missouri I ever dealt with. You tell the senator that if he wants to break up the Democratic Party in the middle of the war, that's his responsibility!" Then he slammed down the phone.
"Well," said Truman. "If that's the situation, I'll have to say yes.
But why the hell didn't he tell me?"
On Friday, July 21, 1944, Harry accepted the nomination for Vice President. Bess was not happy.
During the convention, no one wanted to say anything about the way Roosevelt looked.
It was doubtful that he would live to complete his term in office. This had to be on the minds of everyone, including Truman.
On April 12th Harry's worst fears came true. President Roosevelt was dead.
Vice President for just 82 days, Harry was now President of the United States...
a job he never wanted.
