Bessie....

Her name was Elizabeth Virginia Wallace, and she was the only girl Harry ever loved.

They met in Sunday School when they were 6 years old. Harry never thought of another girl after that.

They attended the same school from elementary thru graduation.

Bess was popular, outgoing and a great athlete. She played tennis, fenced, and was a terrific third baseman.

She belonged to a very prominent family in Independence, whereas Harry came from a farm family.

They lived in one of the biggest houses in town. There were lace curtains on the windows and carpets on the floor. They even had a servant.

When Harry walked up those steps, it was like going into a different world where they didn't get their hands dirty or worry about insects and such.

Harry was in love, and he was determined. But Bess held back.

Her mother thought she could do better.

But then Mrs. Wallace didn't think anyone was good enough for her daughter.

The Wallace family had problems that were not apparent to the outside world. Bess was 18 years old when tragedy struck.
