The expression, "Mardi Gras" comes from
the French and means "Fat Tuesday." It has
become a festive carnival celebrating
the last
opportunity to indulge in food and drink and
outrageous behavior before the advent
of Lent. Although the term "Mardi Gras" refers to a
specific day (always falling between
February 3
and March 9), the celebrations actually take
place
over a longer period leading up
to Mardi Gras
Day.
