They lived in St. Remi Quebec, then moved to La prairee Quebec.. then they moved to Franklin Co. New York about 1851, The first census they show up on is in 1860. They were given the surname of Batraw by the census taker. Some went on to be Bartons, some stayed with Batraw, but none changed their name back to Bertrand.

          I did post this question on a French Quebec genealogy site and the answer was YES, Bertrand in Quebec French would sound like (Batraw).

          In many years of Quebec research, the wives on both sides of my family tree are connected thru marriage the Dumas, Recards and Petels

     This is understandable, they lived in the same communities and moved to new locations together.

     I have learned from Dumas cousins that the Shatraw line has married into the Dumas line. I have to wonder if the same thing might have happened to the Shatraws
     ( wrong surname)?

     My ggrandfather was baptized Phelps Bertrand in Quebec (1851). on the 1860 Fort Covington/Franklin Co.census.he was called Phelps Batraw
     On his marriage record, he was called Phidime Bertrand, this was recorded in Latin at the Notre Dame Church in Malone N.Y...

     One of his sons, my grandfather was also named Phelps

     Years later on a Franklin Co. N.Y. census, he was known as Freeman Barton, as well as his son, the name their descendants came to know them by.
