    Bertrand/Batraw/Barton

    Doug,

I checked immigration records in Malone, but no Freeman Barton or Firman Bertrand. I did find: Joseph Barton, lived in Malone and arrived in US in 1861, Naturalized on 8/16,1888. This was witnessed by a F. Barton. Also, David Barton lived in Bangor, arrived in US in 1849 and naturalized on 7/1/1876. Age 28 at naturalization time. George Barton, also Bangor, arrived in 1870 and naturalized on 10/24/1892. Age 22 Emery Bertrand, born 5/12/1884, lived in Malone. Entered US in 1905 and naturalized in 1919.

I checked NY Census for 1925 and found him in Malone, at age 43. He had been in the US for 40 years and was listed as being from Canada but a Citizen of the US. He is listed as a carpenter. with the following Family Members:

Philena, wife, age 42 from Canada. In US for 20 years and a citizen.
Clarence, son, 18 years, born in US and a day laborer.
Bertha, daughter, 16 years, born in US, house servant.
Gertrude, daughter, 16 years, born US, housework.
    Twins
Clifford, son, 15 years, born US, school
Eva, daughter, 11 years, born US, school
Rita, daughter, 10 years, born US, school

I hope this info helps. The immigration cards would not have indicated where in Canada he was from, they only list country. I have a copy of the census sheet if you would like it, it is hard to read. I can't remember the street they lived on, but the lady at the county building said it was behind the County Building a few streets in an area that was referred to as the Depot. She said there was a man at the Finburg (sp) Library, SUNY Plattsburg that had done a lot of research and had found a list of everyone in that area. I didn't catch his name. I believe that the info was compiled by a man in Australia. You might call the library and ask for an individual in the geneology department.
I'll be going back to Malone in about Two weeks if I can look anything up for you.

    Bill Russell
