JOSEPH DUMAS

A PRINTABLE PHOTO

I think this man is my great great grandfather.

The original now belongs to my son, Matt. On the back, it says: "Joseph Dumas of Huntingdon, Quebec, who lived to be 106 years old. Picture acquired (by Leonard Dumas) from Buddy Flynn in 1971." Now it looks like Mose Dumas gave it to his daughter, Laura Dumas Crippen, who in turn gave it to her daughter, Carolyne "Buddy" Flynn, who is Anne Phillips' mother.      I don't believe there is a way to absolutely authenticate this photo. I'm willing to accept it on faith, and label it "believed to be Joseph Dumas, father of Mose Dumas."

You can all make your own judgement

These two pictures were handed down to me via my grandfather (Joseph) and my father (Leonard). They are old-fashioned tin-type.

Moise Dumas and Marie Ricard 1907

A PRINTABLE PHOTO

Married January 11, 1869 in Hemmingford Quebec.
Moises parents--Joseph Dumas & Rosalie Faubert.
Maries parents-Maxime Ricard & Solomee Hout Guillot

In 1907, Mose was 66 and Mary was 56. In this photo they are dressed for my grandfathers wedding,(Joseph) so it may be that both photos were taken on the same date, especially when you consider how seldom portrait possibilites presented themselves.

Matt and I think that the brothers photo was probably taken in 1907, at my grandfather's wedding.

JOSEPH, WILLIAM, HENRY, ANDREW

A PRINTABLE PHOTO

I know the exact date of this one: May 4, 1952, Malone N.Y.

The brothers had returned from the burial service in Burke for their sister Rosalie. and her living brothers got together for one last photo before heading on for home, they were more or less saying goodbye.

It was later this day that William fell to his death from a third-story window at his home, making beds for houseguests who had to stay over, probably due to the lateness in the day.

Several family members, including some of Uncle Bill's children, have confirmed this.

Actually, Uncle Henry got all the way home to Salem, NH, before he heard the news, and had to turn around and head back to Burke for Bill's funeral.

Isma Pritchard who attended the funeral told me about the whole affair.

Aunt Margaret Shatraw was upset because the gravediggers had not dug Rosalie's grave in the proper place. She turned to who was next to her and said, "This is a bad omen. Someone else in the family will die soon!"

How prophetic (and spooky), because Uncle Bill had only a few hours to live.

THE JOSEPH DUMAS FAMILY

Taken around 1917 or so. I'm basing this date on my father, who looks about five years old in the picture.

Front row is Laura, Leonard (my dad), Joseph holding Lloyd, Grandmother Mary Recore Dumas, and Sarah.

Middle row is Bessie Gardner Dumas (my grandmother), Stella Mae (who is Mildred Stowe and Bernie Jock's mother), Aunt Margaret Shatraw, and Uncle Paul Shatraw.

Now for the three men in the back! The man wearing the white shirt and tie is George Shatraw.

Now, who would visit Joseph Dumas and his family along with the others? Well, Andrew Dumas (age 23-24) and Bill Dumas (age 19-20) were still at home at the time, and our guess is that Andrew is on the left, and Bill is in the middle (behind Mae).

This makes sense because he looks younger. And my wife the artist thinks that the guy in the middle looks more like Bill.

Andrew would soon enter World War I.

Bill would soon marry Edith Lawrence.
