Tribute to Baby Doe

Baby Doe, how great you were
In the days of long ago.
You met the King of Silver,
When your heart was filled with woe...

You were criticized unjustly,
By an uppish, self righteous hand;
Some unfit to tie your shoes,
Never trying to understand.

But many there were who loved you,
Knowing the purity of your heart:
You held the respect of miners,
Who knew you from the start.

You were left alone in sorrow,
By a cad, some called a man.
You were offered a job in Leadville,
Then known as the Silver Land.

It was in that land, you met him,
He won your crushed and broken heart...
It was not his mountain of silver,
But the man who played the part.

Women, who envied your beauty,
Secretly, would have given their all
To have been the woman who won him;
Bill Tabor, and his Silver Wall.

Would they have remained as faithful,
With all their heart and soul;
When the great man lost his fortune,
And never achieved his goal.

Yes you held the Matchless,
After the great man was gone;
It was not the silver you cherished,
But the memory of a love forlorn.

Somewhere in that far away Heaven,
Where the streets are paved with gold;
There will surely be some silver,
Shining out bright and bold.

And surely there's a couple united,
In that land where lovers go;
Walking the streets of silver,
Bill Tabor, and his Baby Doe...
