Blue Mermaid

The tale is told of a mermaid
Who lives on the ocean floor
On the eighth day of each passing month
She returns to visit the shore

One day long after sunset
A lady alone and forlorn
Came looking for the sea captain
Who left her heart broken and torn

He told her if he wasn't with her
By sunset of the eighth day
That he'd not be returning to claim her
Instead sailing out on his way

A strong wind blowing seaward
No sign of him coming to dock
Suddenly her whole dream world
Went crashing like waves on the rock

After watching the beacon for hours
She slipped into the depth of the brine
Taking one last breath of marine air
She sinks, leaving earth-life behind

On the eighth day of each month thereafter
As the fishermen all take their turn
A mermaid surfaces out at the reef
Still looking for her skipper's return...
