Chapter 13

March 27, 2001

Last Saturday it was a funny day and we didn't have a lot of time as my sitter for Albie wanted to leave early so we just took a ride to Cape May which is about 30 miles from here/ First it was sunny, then rainy and very windy. The weather was very unpredictable, almost as bad as Vel and I when we are out. First off we decided since the sun was shinning we would stop and get bolonga, turkey, cheese, rolls etc. for a picnic. Then we headed down the road. It is as lovely ride as you go through a lot of little towns, and there must be 200 antique places along rt.9. There are a lot of old homes in this area since it dates back to the late 1600's, First we drove out to the Cape May Ferry. and wandered around, took a pit stop, so speak. They are doing a lot of work down there, building a new terminal, It is really neat and you will be closer to the water to watch the boats, and there will be a restaurant , I believe on the top so it should have a beautiful view of the Deleware Bay. We left there and drove down a side street where you can sit and just en the view. There is a small boardwalk with benches also a pavillion with picnic tables, but we didn't eat there. Quite a few cars and "old people" sitting there enjoying the scenery and reading their newspapers. We stayed a while and then took off looking for a place near the water but more quiet and less traffic. We drove along the road that is bordered by the bay, really nice, but WAIT, there is a house right smack in the middle of the road, "dead end" now we have to turn around and find how to get to the other side, Haha, well needless to say we had to turn this way and that way in order to find the road that went back. Finally we got back on and continured on our merry way, Lo and behold another dead end, soooo we turned around and came back almost to the ferry road again, this time we made a rt hand turn and we headed back to the Cape May Beach area. We had been only a couple of miles from the town but with going all different directions and turning here and there,. I guess we rode at least 20 miles before going back to the cape. This town is very quaint and very old. Lots of antique shops, hugh beautiful homes that have been made into Bed and Breakfast Inns. There is a lot of building going on, some old homes being refurbished and new ones being built to look old. They are very strict with their building codes, and even the colors of the homes. At one time Cape May was the most popular place for the southeners to come for vacations way back in the 1800's, I guess transportation wasn't very good then. LOL. Well we drove the whole length of Cape May, down to the point, another pavillion and they have a cement walkway along the ocean front. Quite a few people there too, soooo needless to say we did sit for a while, took some pics, then decided this was not a good place to have lunch. Boy! we are two fussy old women when it comes to where we want to have our "dashboard picnic" especially since now it is raining of and on plus being windy. Finally we turn down a street that leads to the U.S. Coast Guard training station and it is right on the intercoastal waterway. If we could have went into the station on the tip it is where the bay and ocean meet. They have some good size rescue boats tied up there, but we settled for a nice spot with plenty of room to park and only some people out on a mud flat either clamming or netting bait. there were a couple of men actually in the water, with high boots on, and then a group of young people, Looked like they were maybe from a school or something. Anyway we finally had our lunch with was as good as a steak. Vel took a picture of me with the sandwich up to my face and my mouth half open but I won't put that in the album. I being the shy person I am, I certainly didn't want you to see a pic of me like that. Yuk, Anyway we had a good day and of course we laugh at anything and everything. I am late with this but have been busy with Albie, he is in the hospital since Monday night, and I had so much to do, making phone calls etc and I did go see him yesterday and getting myself in gear to go over today. He is going to be alright, Poor guy. Anyway send what pictures I have and hope you enjoy them. Lots of hugs to all, Vi
