Chapter 15

June 9, 2001

Well it sure was a beautiful day. Temperature in the 80's bright and sunny. Great day to go for a ride and just wander. We left Somers Point around 12:15pm and decided to head southwest. After we got on the road, we zig-zagged around our own county. Went to the Atlantic County Park and drove through. It is so pretty there and lots of people picnicing. Didn't get out of the car, just rode through. We did some turning here and there and ended out in the country. Never realized there were so many nurseries out there. Amelia should have seen these farms All kinds of trees and shrubs. Really some beautiful areas. it was then we decided to find a restaurant that we had seen somewhere in our travels in that area back in April, and it was closed at the time. Ha, I read the map, which wasn't a very good one. It is a book and has all the maps of the counties of N.J. Needless to say we had been in Atlantic, Cape May and now in Cumberland County. Well let me tell you we were up and down roads. dead ends, no outlets, private property, but does that bother Vel, Haha, no way. We went into one that was completely fenced with a big brick entrance, with statues on it, now you know this was a private home. But we went on in, signs along the road about dogs can get to the fence faster than anyone could drive. couple of other signs, Oh boy, I was nervous,. I told her that it was private, she said ,"I don't think anyone will bother us, LOL, we went on in and wow! it was a hugh house with in indoor pool which you could see the chairs inside, It was a big farm, saw a horse trailer, and lots of fields, maybe someone who races horses lived there, There was a circular driveway in front of the house with lots of flowers, really a beautiful home, Vel said looked like kids lived there too, so we were safe. She did go around the driveway and headed out,   I thought for sure someone would come running out with a shotgun. It was fun but I always believe in signs. Ha ha, Vel doesn't. We went miles on all kinds of back roads, oh they were marked like 623, onto 640, then 703 and on and on. We didn't know were the hell we were. but finally we thought we were on the right road, We knew the restaurant was on the water, and there was a marina. Well needless to say, when we got near the water, we saw a sign that said (can't rememer the name) state park. Oh yea we had passed a lot of woods and open fields to get there but it ended in a small area with a few trees and lots of open water, but looked more like a flooded meadow. So we had to turn around and start over.

We finally found another road that would head out toward the Cohansey River, and lo and behold we saw the blue awnings in the distant. hooray, here it was. We had traveled 93 miles, and it was 4pm.

Talk about having to have a P break, plus being hungry. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all, but the people were very nice. I told them I needed to find the ladies room before I sat down. We had a nice table in the corner facing the river. Lots of big boats parked by the floating docks. The restaurant was huge, all in light color wood, real high ceilings, with a fireplace. There was a small boat hanging from the ceiling aboung with some fish net placed here and there. Lots of pictures, and lighthouses placed in different areas. The tablecloths were pale blue with sailboats and flags on, The chairs were lightwood seats with white spindle backs. Windows were all along the whole length of the place. Really clean and quaint with the seashore motiff. Here is a picture of the outside, that we took last April. Vel forgot the camera, but I had this in my album. This was to the right side of the restaurant but now there are big boats all lines up, also some travel trailers were parked along the river. Looks like people stay there all summer. Really a neat place. We had delicious crab and shrimp soup, clam pie and coffee. The pie was a little flat, but we were hungry so it was ok. Next time, if we ever can find it again, we will try their seafood. But I never had clam pie, so it was different. We found out that we were actually only about 40 miles from home. We left there around 5:30 and the place really had a lot of people in there for dinner, guess we were just early. We found a more direct route home. When we got back to Somers Point, we went to our local park which is right on the bay. We decided one of these days we should have a bolonga & cheese picnic down there. It is a beautiful spot. Lots of people were enjoying their selves right in our back yard. The traffic was really heavy around that area, but the summer always brings in the shoobies. (out of towners) haha. Every restaurant we passed, people were waiting to get in. Glad we went out of town, haha. We had a wonderful day and hope many more to come. Now I am home and ready for some baseball. Hope you enjoyed reading about our little jaunt It has been a long time. Lots of love and hugs to all.
