Halloween...page 3.

Halloween in this country has changed drastically since I was a little girl. It seems to me my parents took us out to different neighborhoods for 2 or 3 nights, and I didn't have to worry about finding a razor blade in an apple, or any of the other nasty things that have happened to ruin this day for the children. Since it is no longer safe to go as we did, parents are finding others ways to allow the children to trick or treat. Really, there isn't much tricking anymore, just treating. The malls, for one, take part in this by passing out candies and other kinds of treats to the children, and there are parties to go to, so you can still dress up. Even so, there are still some brave kids that will dress up and go out into the night, carrying their lanterns (or flashlights), and "trick or treat" from door to door.

TRICK OR TREAT
This holiday is still one of the most popular we celebrate. So here are a few tips for fun and safety...

1. Never, never go to strange houses. Go to people you know. They will get a kick out of seeing your costume, and they will be happy to give you a treat.

2. Please wear a costume. Why should someone give you a treat if you're not wearing a costume? That's not celebrating the holiday in the right way. You can ask for a treat any old time.

3. Don't call on people if you know they don't like opening the door at night, especially the elderly.

4. Don't play tricks that cause damage to property or extreme messes. People are not going to like it if they have to pay to have things fixed or cleaned up. That takes away from the fun.

5. When someone gives you a treat, remember to say "Thank you".

Now, what about those meanies that won't give you anything?

A few HARMLESS tricks you could perform......

1. Put a piece of tape across their doorbell, then push the bell to ring, and run!!!! You might want to hide so you can watch them come to the door again to see who's there. After all, they didn't treat...isn't that why you did this trick?

2. Tie a piece of strong string to their doormat, then hide...when they open the door, pull the string. I bet they'll be surprised.

I will be adding more to this page in time. I'm so glad when I ask permission to use someone else's article, they said no, for personal reasons. Thank you. It caused me to do my own research.

These are the books from the library that I used for reference.

1. GHOSTS WITCHES, and things like that.... by Roderick Hunt.

2. Halloween, by Gail Gibbons. This is a childs book.

3. Medieval Holidays and Festivals by Madeleine Pelner Cosman.

Happy Halloween to all my friends.
