TRIBUTES

Mary Cosgrove's Tribute

Matt Hanks' Tribute

This tribute was written by Matt Hanks to his mother, Mary Cosgrove.

Mom - What a beautifully worded yet readably written and fascinating article about your Mom. I always smile when I think of the rich heritage that I belong to as a result of you and always remember as if they were yesterday, the visits back east which you should know meant the world to Andrea and me as kids. They remain some of the most formative memories of my childhood and I can still remember to this day:

* Using the carbon and tracing paper on the headstones.
* Standing on the bridge where the Redcoats charged at the American soldiers.
* Visiting the place where Paul Revere rode from to alert the other Minutemen "the British are coming, the British are coming."
* Hearing you and Dad tell me this is the place from which the “shot heard round the world” was fired. I still remember asking, "how could they have heard it all the way around the world??"
* Visiting the grist mill where your childhood school was.
* The rabbits on Grammy's lawn early in the morning when we woke up.
* The nightmares I had in the room in Grammy's house, with the stuffed owl and his glassy eyes.
* The Plymouth station wagon your parents had.
* The miniature scale coal-fired trains that your Dad loved so much, and getting my own engineer's cap.
* Picking blackberries.
* The old rusted out model A (or was that a T?) Ford in the woods by your parents’ property.
* The long, long driveway.
* Marveling at your Dad's iceboating gear on the big wraparound porch.
* Hunting frogs and riding on the tractor with Beth who I thought was so pretty.
* Driving past the Longfellow Inn, and hearing you tell jokes.
* Sticking my hand out the window and Grammy telling me to get it back in the car, it was dangerous.
* Seeing the ships sunk in the harbor - creepy.

I love you Mom. The article was great.
Matt
