When he was in his eighties, Clyde undertook a remarkable project: putting together a massive genealogical volume of the Howletts, along with his Wolcott and Fleming relatives. The illustrated book contains detailed family tree data peppered with interesting information about various members. Beside his own entry, Clyde wrote a short autobiography. Notes for CLYDE WOLCOTT HOWLETT SR: Two years in High School, Two years in Trade School (Worcester) Logged at the Morgan Farm. Stayed on there. Milked cows and other farm chores. When the war started went to work at General Electric. Then in 1945 1 worked as the Mill Foreman at the Clark Lumber Co. in West Townsend until Ralph Clark ( the owner’s son ) came home from the war. In January of 1954 went to work for Sprague and Carlton in Milford New Hampshire. Six months of that, driving in snow and Ice decided to Go West young man before I get any older. Had an uncle living in Riverside California. Martha and I loaded up the car with three children and left Hazel Tenney's for the Great Adventure. Had a good trip in an old Dodge. Went to Oregon first, had been in the Civilian Conservation Corps there in the 1930's. There was not much work there so we headed south to Riverside California - at that time my uncle Roger Howlett lived there. At Mira Loma Air Force Base re-crated wing tanks. That lasted about 6 months. When that was over decided to go see Ken Harper who was a good friend of Martha's mother (Hazel Tenney ) when she lived in Bethel Vermont. At that time he was just starting the Culligan Soft Water Service. As I was walking by the window he motioned me to come in. He asked me if I was doing anything. I said yes I’m looking for a job. He laughed at that and asked when I wanted to come to work. I asked him what my job would be. He replied you will be the plant Manager. Said that was ok with me. He told me that he had just bought Culligan soft water service and was looking for a plant manager and that was my job. I worked for nine years. He retired that Christmas. The new owner and I did not get along, and he decided to let me go. About that time my wife was sick, and her mother (Hazel Tenney) come out to see her. Martha died a few days later. The following week her mother died. Soon got a job with a small machine shop, operating a screw machine. That lasted for a while. Got a job at Steiner and Mattier in Whittier California making wooden shutters. Did most everything from shaper hand to general repair in the mill. Drove back and forth to work 50 miles each way in Los Angeles traffic. At 65 I retired, but every year went back for a few months. Finally retired for good and moved to Safford , Az. Helped build a prefab house for Herman and my daughter Rebecca. My second wife did not want to go so we parted. In 1988 we moved to Tucson. In 1994 Rebecca left us to be with her Mother. and That Is That. In the past 4 or more years have done volunteer data entry work for the Red Cross, Oasis, P.C.O.A. Family Help Center and others. Now I am truly retired, for I am too old to drive. At 88 It's Good Night ALL, Time For Bed. |
