A Tribute from Nancy Murdock

My oldest living relative, cousin Clyde Howlett, died peacefully September 15, 2007 - five days after his 98th birthday. Until very recently, Clyde was very alert and fully involved in life. My sister Polly was his caregiver, and the two of them got along extremely well. Clyde also enjoyed Polly's cat, Sophie, who immediately adopted Clyde as one of her permanent favorites after he moved there.

Clyde was very interested in anything that went on around him. But his big interests were his computer and his garden. A couple of years ago, he sent away for a hydroponic garden setup, where he raised tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, and peppers.

The computer was his big interest, though. He would keep up with everything on the Internet and upgrade his computer when anything new came out. For the past six or so years, he had a regular printer and a photo printer. He made his own greeting cards, including a decorated envelope, on his computer.

He put together a very big project, a very detailed genealogy for the Howlett family and his mother's side also. We will always cherish this. Even though it did have a few errors,we refer to it often.

We were fortunate to visit with Clyde when we took our summer trip to New Hampshire. He had fallen and was in a rehab hospital, but no one knew at that time that he would not be able to return to his normal daily life, so it was all sunshine.

We will all miss him. As far as we know, my oldest living relative now is Clyde's brother, Bradford Howeltt. It's hard to see people go, but we will focus on the times we spent with Clyde when he was living. He is a great example of getting the most out of the days available to us.
