By Meredith Murdock - November, 2006 I didn't get to spend a lot of time with her, but I do have a few great memories of Grandma Murdock. When I was three, she made me a handmade doll (bigger than me) which was made from black jeans. It had an afro made of yarn, and I named it Lucy. I loved that doll so much! I found out later, it was actually supposed to be little Michael Jackson! Funny thing, I was a Michael fan from early on, too - wonder if the doll had anything to do with that? I got to go visit Grandma and Grandpa when I was about four. I remember the beautiful glass items she collected (mainly blue glass, I think). I was also very impressed with a big can of mismatched buttons. She even let me pick some out. She took me outside to see some flowers, too, I remember. I don't recall what she cooked, but I do remember dessert was WONDERFUL! I think it was something like peach pie from scratch. By the way, that vacation was the only time I got to see Grandpa, and he took me on a walk with him all by myself so I could have some Grandpa time. I think I was about 20 the last time I got to see Grandma, and she told my little cousin, "this is your cousin Meri, who USED to write to me like you do." Oops! Even though we lived far away, and I did not get to spend a lot of time with her physically, Grandma was very good about writing to me often and sending gifts she made herself from her heart - letting me know I had a Grandma who loved me. I definitely feel sorry for people who never got that from a grandparent. |
