I ADORED EDNA HOWLETT
Barb DiStefano

I adored Edna Howlett. When I would go visit Polly as a child, her Mom Edna was always there, in the background, making the atmosphere warm and loving. She was basically the first close adult experience person for me outside of my family. My parents were warm, but rather formal. Manners were practiced and many euphemisms used.

Imagine my gleeful surprise, then, when I overheard Mrs. Howlett from the bathroom, spouting off a little verse: "Here I sit, all broken hearted, I paid a nickle and only farted." My, my, this is fun, I thought. And by the way, someone in the family informed me it was spelled with a "ph," not an "f" . I think at that moment, hearing her, was when I decided I would dare to do and say what I wanted, at least after weighing the consequences. And I have. What a relief.

One day when I was "staying for supper," a big event in my life, she asked me if I wanted to go out with her and gather cowslips for supper. I said yes, and wondered how you could eat them, but was curious enough to go with her. You see I had never heard of cowslips, so translated that into "cow flaps." which are certainly not edible.

Mrs. Howlett also introduced me to a delightful dessert I had never had, which was sour cream raisin pie!! Yummy!! And I wasn't allowed pie at home, so that made it all the better.

She always seemed very wise, and capable of handling anything. When anyone mentions her, I get a warm fuzzy feeling, because I adored her.
