A GREAT LADY TO REMEMBER
Carl "Chip" Martz

I certainly would like to recognize and celebrate the 100th anniversary of my Aunt Edna's birthday.

When I was growing up in Hubbardston between 1946 and 1956, my mother, Doris, and Edna were very close. One result of that friendship was that I spent a lot of time with my Howlett cousins, especially Doug.

I remember Aunt Edna driving that old Ford with us kids to get fresh spring water--not from bottles at the store, but from a real spring! Then there were those summer swimming trips to Comet Pond. I can also visualize a big pot of maple sap on her stove as it reduced to syrup.

After Foster died and she moved the family to the Mannisto house, that was just up Depot Rd. from where we lived. That house had a real bathtub, so I graduated from a galvanized tub to that (once a week, I might add).

Aunt Edna was so generous in taking me under her wing so much of the time, since my mother worked as a nurse at the VA hospital in Rutland. I can truly say she was a second mother to me at that time. She is a great lady to remember now.
